Major findings! New research led by Lurie Children's Pediatric Surgery Division Head, Dr. Mehul Raval, shows that enhanced recovery protocols (ERPs) improves outcomes for kids undergoing gastrointestinal surgery. ERPs are interventions developed using input from clinicians, nurses, anesthesia teams, child psychologists, patient-families. Utilizing ERPs led to reduced opioid use and fewer complications, and children were also able to return to a regular diet more quickly—highlighting the beneficial role of ERPs in pediatric surgical outcomes. Congratulations to Lurie Children's Juvenile Justice Collaborative (JJC) for winning the 2026 American Hospital Association (AHA) Dick Davidson NOVA Award! This well-deserved honor recognizes JJC for their collaborative efforts in improving the well-being of individuals and communities through health care, economic, or social endeavors. A recent study demonstrated JJC's success in helping youth avoid deeper involvement in the justice system and lowering recidivism rates. Dr. Karen Sheehan, Medical Director of Patrick M. Magoon Institute for Healthy Communities, stated that this award recognizes the critical work done by JJC in exploring and addressing the root causes of youth involvement with the justice system. https://lnkd.in/gtQHj-Si Ann & Robert H. When a child is diagnosed with a rare condition far from home, access to the right care, and support, makes all the difference. At Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, one international family found both. Their son, born with Hirschsprung’s disease, underwent successful, complex surgery led by the hospital’s pediatric specialists, including Dr. Erin Rowell, a surgeon who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of congenital anomalies and acquired diseases in newborns, infants, children and adolescents. Equally critical, Lurie Children’s International Patient Services team coordinated every detail — from travel to ongoing care—so the family could focus on healing. Today, their son is thriving.

A retrospective study by Lurie Children's researchers examined the risk factors in children for complication and reoperation after treatment for a condition called discoid lateral meniscus. The study revealed that re-injury occurs in almost 13% of patients, with female patients at higher risk for requiring repeat surgery. Multi-center research groups are collaborating to advance understanding on meniscus tears, accelerate diagnosis times, and improve treatment options. Craig Finlayson, MD, Attending Physician in the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, and Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Northwestern University - The Feinberg School of Medicine is an author of the study. https://lnkd.in/gf9YkJnu #research #pediatrics #orthopedicsurgery #pediatricorthopedics #discoidlateralmeniscus

Although insurance type, race, ethnicity shouldn't determine access to care, two new studies reveal that these factors are linked to disparities in access to timely orthopedic evaluation and treatment. Research by Lurie Children's orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Neeraj Patel concluded that #pediatric patients with public insurance and those from racially minoritized communities face significant delays in specialized evaluation, imaging, and surgical interventions for sports-related injuries—leading to long-term complications and poorer outcomes. According to Dr. Patel, further analysis and collaborative #research is needed to design interventions aimed at reducing disparities. https://lnkd.in/gUFmMTma Ann & Robert H. Sepsis occurs in 1.3% of pediatric hospitalizations and accounts for a 10% mortality rate every year in the U.S., according to new study findings by researchers from Lurie Children's. An analysis of clinical data records from more than 3.9 million hospitalizations revealed that 72% of cases developed before the children were hospitalized. To help reduce hospitalizations and deaths, it is critical that parents recognize the early symptoms of #sepsis and seek prompt medical attention. Co-authors on the study include Dr. Elizabeth Alpern, Division Head of Emergency Medicine at Lurie Children’s and Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and L. Nelson Sanchez-Pinto,MD,MBI, a Critical Care physician at Lurie Children’s and Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. https://lnkd.in/gpidDnFA Ann & Robert H.
