As Patrick Quigley told Washington Post Intelligence yesterday: "The exchanges are falling short in large part because the network requirement has meant that every plan available is based on the same struggling model." New federal rules are opening up the ACA marketplace to network-free plans in 2028. More models mean more competition, more transparency, and better care for patients. Today, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services removed the network requirement for ACA exchange plans — and it's a big deal. Networks were designed to control costs and guarantee access, but they've struggled to do either. This decision opens the door to real competition between genuinely different models: ones built on price transparency, open access, and incentives to shop for value. Here, we share more on what this decision means and what comes next.

For decades, health insurance has been built on a foundational assumption: that networks protect members, control costs, and guarantee access to care. The data tells a different story. Join Sidecar Health Chief Marketing Officer Kevin Knight and Chief Public Affairs Officer Emily Porter Kolego for a candid conversation that challenges three of the most persistent myths in health insurance — and explains why the current policy moment makes this conversation more urgent than ever. https://lnkd.in/exAJmSs3

What a great couple of weeks! We've been lucky enough to get to sit down with Matthew Hall at both The Conference Board and Business Group on Health annual meetings to talk about how Koch lowered healthcare costs with Sidecar Health. Matt went deep on the framework, the data, and the practical steps that made it possible. Grateful to both conferences for the platform, and to Matt for sharing Koch's real-world case study.

We love when nerds get together to talk about healthcare, especially when they're our nerds. Health Tech Nerds members Nancy Wang and Craig Allen, joined Martin Cech on the Health Tech Nerds podcast last week to talk about how Sidecar Health is flipping the legacy insurance model on its head — giving members real price transparency, cash-back incentives for smart spending, and massive premium savings for employers. From the history of consumer-driven care to where alternative plan designs are headed, it's a great listen for anyone curious about the future of healthcare.
There's a debate happening about the virtues of no-network plans in the ACA after CMS' latest proposed marketplace proposed rule. I think the debate lacks nuance. Like a lot of things in health care, it seems like an interesting idea that's worth testing so long as the plans are careful about marketing, implementation, user experience, and customer service. This view is mostly informed by my relationship with Sidecar Health who seem to be doing just that in a careful and thoughtful way. As we wait for the final marketplace rule to drop, I think it's worth tuning into my conversation with Nancy Wang and Craig Allen on network-less plans, alternative benefit design, and how consumerism can work in health care.
