Long-duration energy storage (LDES) will be underutilized because the current planning, market design, and operations framework is fundamentally misaligned with the LDES value proposition. Recent work by Quanta Technology, LLC explores how to modify this framework by incorporating multiday scheduling horizons and the uncertainties around renewable production and load. Using this innovative framework, utilities and independent system operators can integrate LDES into electrical system operations and planning, especially in light of a high-renewable future. Moreover, this solution can enable system operators to efficiently plan for high levels of renewable penetration by leveraging an optimal amount of LDES relative to the rest of the resource portfolio.   This article was part of a project with Sandia National Laboratories.
