"Just book the appointment." It's the simplest sentence in healthcare scheduling. It's also the one that humbles every technology vendor who walks in confident. A patient calls. They want to see a dermatologist. Cool. Easy. Then the questions start. PPO? About two days out. HMO with an active referral? Roughly a week. HMO without a primary care doc on file? A month from now — assuming this clinic accepts the plan at all, in this state, on this provider's panel. That's not an edge case. That's the workflow. When we deploy our AI voice agent into a new practice, the hardest part of the build isn't the conversation. It isn't the EHR integration. It's the rules — the ones that live in the head of the credentialing coordinator who's been doing this for fifteen years. The healthcare AI market has a structural problem. One vendor for inbound phone scheduling. Another for fax processing. A third for outreach. A fourth for digital intake. Each one demos beautifully. Each one solves a real problem. Then the contracts get signed, and the ops or IT manager spends half her week making sure these four systems aren't stepping on each other. The rebooking tool just texted a patient the outreach tool is about to call. Nobody planned for this. It just happens. When we started Parakeet, we made a call I think about a lot: Build one platform instead of a bunch of separate tools. Significantly harder up front. But a referral that comes in by fax, gets routed, booked, cancelled, and rebooked isn't four workflows. It's one workflow with four touchpoints. Discussing building in voice AI with Faraz Siddiqi (Bluejay), Natalie Rutgers (Deepgram), and Kwindla Hultman Kramer (Daily/Pipecat) was definitely a highlight of last week. Thank you Obvious Ventures for hosting and Abhived Pulapaka for asking all the hard hitting questions on everything from building for specific customer workflows down to model-level innovation in the space. It was refreshing to see that the challenges we see daily: gracefully handling turn-taking, context detection, and scaling evaluations (to name a few), seem to be universally shared! The other highlight was having our whole Parakeet Health team in town for a jam-packed week of the usual: shipping products quickly/launching with new clients/jamming late/whiteboarding and most importantly, debating on where to find the best sandwich in SOMA - my vote is Oink and Oscar.
