The New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) promotes the mental health and well-being of all New Yorkers. Our mission is to facilitate recovery for young to older adults receiving treatment for serious mental illness, to support children and families in their social and emotional development and early identification of serious emotional disturbances, and to improve the capacity of communities across New York to achieve these goals. New York State has a large, multi-faceted mental health system that serves more than 700,000 individuals each year. OMH operates psychiatric centers across the state, and regulates, certifies, and oversees more than 4,500 programs that are operated by local governments and nonprofit agencies. These programs include various inpatient and outpatient programs, emergency, community support, residential, and family care programs. In more than 400 primary and OB/GYN practices in NYS, mental health concerns are treated in the same place as physical health concerns. It’s part of the state’s Collaborative Care Model, which integrates behavioral health providers into the primary care team to improve access to care. Identifying mental health challenges early leads to better outcomes for mothers, caregivers and their entire family. Maternal Mental Health impacts the whole family, not just the birthing parent. That’s why HealthySteps programs have a strong focus on both caregivers and their young children. OMH has provided support for over 150 sites to implement the program across NYS. HealthySteps is an evidence-based program that is built into pediatrician offices. These sites provide universal screening for maternal depression and social determinants of health--- connecting families to the supports they may need.
