Strengthening and Empowering Kentucky's Children and Families
About us
In Kentucky, the state with a top-five child abuse rate, Maryhurst is transforming kids’ lives. Our work prevents abuse, restores hope, and empowers survivors. At the first sign of conflict, Maryhurst’s counseling program partners with families to strengthen relationships and protect kids’ safety. For girls whose histories of trauma have left them without a safe home, our residential programs provide a place of healing. As soon as kids are ready, our transitional living and aftercare services create pathways to permanency, stability and better futures. We believe that strong family relationships are the foundation of healthy growth. Some form of family development — be it strengthening existing bonds or building new ones — is a goal we set with every child in our care. Maryhurst is a private, 501(c)(3), not-for-profit agency dedicated to changing for the better the lives of children in greatest need, often survivors of extreme neglect or physical & sexual abuse. April is Child Abuse Awareness Month. It’s a time to confront hard truths and take meaningful action. Proud to share this important perspective from our CEO Paula Garner, LCSW, MBA on how we can all play a role in protecting and advocating for children and families across the Commonwealth.
In Kentucky, more than 14 of every 1,000 children will suffer abuse each year, nearly double the national average. While that number is alarming, we are making progress, lowering it by nearly a quarter in recent years. As Kentucky’s oldest child welfare organization, I want to mark National Child Abuse Prevention Month by sharing what is working and how you can help. Not long ago, a young child in one of our partner schools was on the verge of being expelled from kindergarten. She struggled to regulate her emotions, had frequent outbursts, and often withdrew from her peers. Those behaviors were not just disruptions in the classroom. They were warning signs of trauma and possible abuse or neglect that could have been ignored until the situation became more serious. It would have been easy to label her as a problem. It would have been easy to give up. Instead, someone made the intentional choice to step in. Through Maryhurst’s Renewal program, our team worked closely with that child and her family, helping them access support, build trust, and restore stability at home. Several months later, that same child stood proudly in front of her class holding a certificate for Student of the Week. That moment may seem small on the surface, but it represents something powerful. It shows what happens when a child is seen, supported, and given a chance to succeed. At Maryhurst, prevention and early intervention are at the heart of everything we do. This work depends on people who are willing to get involved by volunteering, advocating for families, and supporting programs that keep children safe. Breaking the cycle of abuse requires all of us to show up. Will you join us? Learn how you can take action to support children and families. This morning, members of the Maryhurst team had the opportunity to attend the Leadership Louisville Center 100 Wise Women event alongside Paula Garner, LCSW, MBA, joining an inspiring group of women leaders from across the Louisville community. We left feeling energized and encouraged after meaningful conversations and powerful insights from keynote speaker Valle Jones, known for urban real estate development and community advocacy, and thoughtful remarks from Sadiqa Reynolds, founder of the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center and a visionary leader dedicated to expanding opportunity in our community. Opportunities like this remind us of the importance of connection, shared leadership, and investing in one another. Looking forward to continuing these conversations and strengthening partnerships that move our mission forward. #LeadershipLouisville #100WiseWomen #WomenInLeadership #CommunityImpact #Maryhurst
