🚴 6 days until Ski To Sea! Today we're featuring our Janicki-made cyclocross and road bicycles. Janicki manufactured the frames, which combine carbon fiber tubes bladder-molded in two-part female tooling with 5-axis machined aluminum lugs, structurally bonded together and finished to aerospace paint standards. Their construction mirrors what Janicki does every day on aerospace programs. 🛩️ An earlier prototype, nicknamed the "Frankenbike", was used to test novel techniques like 3D printed titanium nodes and bladder-molded thermoplastic tubes before the race frames were finalized. The result is a set of lightweight, stylish frames that can be outfitted for either road biking or cyclocross. All other parts are off-the-shelf commercially available bike parts. 9 days to Ski to Sea! Over the next few days we're breaking down the gear we built for the race. Today's feature is of our downhill skis and snowboard and cross country skis. ⛷️ Downhill skis — laminated with an out-of-autoclave fiberglass prepreg over a wood core. Multiple sets were produced to dial in the ply schedule and hit target stiffness, validating a process that keeps costs and equipment requirements low. The result is a ski that's extremely lightweight and easy to ride. 🏂 Snowboard — originally built by a Janicki intern using a wet-lamination process, with a poplar wood core wrapped in fiberglass and epoxy resin. The mold was made from stacked plywood profiles cut on a CNC router, a low-cost and sustainable alternative to conventional tooling. It proved that quality composite parts don't require aerospace-grade equipment. 🎿 Cross-country skis — wood veneer and carbon fiber prepreg co-cured in an autoclave. The construction matches the stiffness of a full-composite ski while swapping polymer plies for wood to reduce environmental footprint. On Sunday, May 24, Janicki employees will compete in Ski to Sea on equipment designed and built entirely in-house. 🏂 The Made by Janicki team will cover every leg of the multi-sport relay race on Janicki-built equipment, including downhill skis, a snowboard, cross-country skis, a road bike, a cyclocross bike, a canoe and a surfski kayak. The running leg and shoes are the only exception. The equipment serves as technology demonstrators and testbeds for materials, processes and manufacturing techniques used in our aerospace and marine work. 🚣 Janicki has sent employee teams to the event every year since 2008. We're hiring an NDI Level II Technician in Hamilton, Washington. In this role you'll set up and calibrate nondestructive testing equipment, conduct inspections using A-scan, B-scan and C-scan methods, and evaluate results in support of aerospace, defense and space programs. NDT Level II certification per NAS 410 in Ultrasonics required. RT certification a plus.
