As the Capital of Silicon Valley, the spirit of innovation powers everything we do for our communities.

About us

From its founding in 1777 as California's first city, San José has been a leader driven by its spirit of innovation. Today, San José stands as the largest city in Northern California and the Capital of Silicon Valley—the world's leading center of technology innovation. San José is the 10th largest in the U.S., and is committed to remaining a top-ranked place to do business, work, live, play and learn. San José is located in Santa Clara County at the southern edge of the San Francisco Bay, about 50 miles south of San Francisco, 390 miles north of Los Angeles. The local weather is hard to beat with moderate year-round temperatures. Residents enjoy 300 days of sunshine each year and an average annual temperature of 70 degrees. The City of San José operates under the council-manager form of government, a system that combines the policy leadership of elected officials in the form of a city council, with the managerial expertise of an appointed city manager.

  • SVCTE Field Trip to Mabury Service Yard | Tuesday, May 12 🚧 Students from Silicon Valley Career Technical Education (SVCTE) visited the City of San José’s Mabury Service Yard for a behind-the-scenes look at what working in the maintenance and public works field looks like. Throughout the visit, students explored real-world operations, connected with City staff, and learned how essential services help keep San José running every day. ⚡ Students toured the City’s electrical shop and learned how crews maintain traffic signal systems and streetlights across San José. They also received hands-on safety instruction, including learning how to properly wear hearing protection before participating in live equipment demonstrations. 🦺 One of the highlights of the trip was the City’s brand-new electric video van, which uses a remote-controlled camera to inspect the underground sewer system. Students were especially excited to see how operators maneuver the camera with a gaming-style controller while detecting issues deep below the street surface, enabling repair crews to be more efficient. 🚛 Throughout the field trip, students also heard directly from Department of Transportation (DOT) staff about their career journeys, day-to-day responsibilities, and pathways into public service careers. The City of San José is proud to support career-based learning opportunities and inspire the next generation of skilled professionals. 🌟 #SVCTE #CareerTechnicalEducation #DOT #CareerPathways
