  • The City of Palo Alto, in partnership with the Palo Alto Recreation Foundation, and signature event series sponsors including Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, Stanford Research Park, and the Palo Alto Weekly, announced today the launch of Thursday Live on Cal Ave., a free outdoor concert series bringing together local musical talent, themed experiences and community activity to California Avenue. Thursday Live on Cal Ave. is a new music event series of six signature dates, held one Thursday each month from 5 to 8 p.m., spanning May through September, and a special October event set for a Saturday. Thursday Live on Cal Ave. will transform Car Free Cal Ave. into a lively gathering space with popular, local music talent, interactive activities, free giveaways, games and themed programming for all ages. Attendees are encouraged to stay, dine, shop and explore Cal Ave. before and after each event. Not to be missed, is the first event in the Thursday Live series. Coming up on Thursday, May 28 this inaugural event will showcase local favorite the Terun Family Band located at the Ash stage and the El Camino stage talent is local Palo Alto-based community favorite Past Curfew Band. Marcus from Marcus in The Morning on Star 101.3 will be the event’s emcee and host.   • NEWS RELEASE: Palo Alto leaders joined regional partners, neighboring agencies and community members today to celebrate the start of construction on the Newell Road Bridge Replacement Project, marking a major milestone in the long-anticipated effort to improve flood protection, transportation safety and resiliency for Palo Alto, East Palo Alto and neighboring communities. Recognizing over 20 years of coordination advancing this project, the celebration brought together representatives from the City of Palo Alto, City of East Palo Alto, Valley Water and Caltrans to mark the start of construction on the approximately $16.12 million project, and the first step in the San Francisquito Creek Reach 2 flood protection project. Connecting the bridge's history with its future, community members gathered for the final public opportunity to view the 1911 Newell Road Bridge before its removal, followed by the unveiling of a new 3D animation that offered a first look at the new bridge design and transformation ahead that will serve the community for generations to come. After years of design, permitting, and community engagement, the advancement of the long-anticipated Newell Road Bridge replacement is a major step forward in regional food protection. The 18-month $16.12 million construction project is funded primarily by the Highway Bridge Program. The Newell Road Bridge construction team has begun mobilizing at the bridge, anticipating bridge work starting on May 18 and creek work starting on June 1, pending permit approvals. The bridge will be closed to vehicles with access continuing for bikes and pedestrians on Monday, May 18 and closed completely on Friday, May 22.
