Congratulations to William Cheaks, Jr., on his appointment by Mayor Brandon Johnson as Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT)! A lifelong Chicagoan, William C. brings more than four decades of experience managing large-scale infrastructure and public operations. Most recently, he served as Managing Deputy Commissioner at the Chicago Department of Water Management, where he oversaw a workforce of 1,800 employees and a $1.58 billion budget, leading efforts to modernize operations, strengthen accountability, and enhance workplace safety. Commissioner Cheaks is no stranger to CDOT, having spent more than a decade as Deputy Commissioner of Infrastructure Management and In-House Construction, where he helped advance innovative tools to improve coordination, transparency, and efficiency across city agencies. Beginning his career as a laborer and working his way through the ranks, Commissioner Cheaks brings a deep understanding of the people and systems that keep Chicago moving. He remains focused on advancing a safe, equitable, and modern transportation system for every Chicagoan.

We were delighted to host the Chicago Department of Transportation Complete Streets team and the Dutch Cycling Embassy at the Consulate General yesterday for a knowledge-sharing session on successes, challenges, and best practices in bike infrastructure. Chicago has seen a major increase in cycling trips over the last decade, and today the city's bike network extends more than 500 miles, with nearly 70 miles of protected lanes. It was fascinating to learn about how the Chicago Cycling Strategy guides CDOT's work as this network grows, and to compare and contrast their Neighborhood Bike Network and stages-of-development approach with the Dutch model. Over the last fifty years, the Netherlands has grown into Europe's preeminent cycling country, and Jeska de Ruiter of the Dutch Cycling Embassy walked us through the (occasionally challenging) path it took to get there, as well as the DCE's software/hardware/orgware perspective on bike infrastructure development. Guided by the five principles of Dutch bike design—that bike infrastructure should be cohesive, direct, safe, comfortable, and attractive—cycling has become a fast, fun, and free way for Dutch residents of all ages to get from A to B. Both flat, windy, and crisscrossed by movable bridges, the Netherlands and Chicago share a few fundamental similarities when it comes to cycling, and we always appreciate the Dutch-Chicago dialogue. Big changes are underway at State and Lake! 🚧 CDOT is leading a major rebuild of the 120-year-old CTA station, which will create a fully-accessible, modern rail hub. Crews have made great progress this winter, including removing the old station house & platform structural steel. Historic materials are being carefully salvaged for reuse in the new station and donated to local institutions like the Illinois Railway Museum.
