Excited to be presenting our work on driver safety at the Google Automotive Partner Bootcamp this week: “Moving Beyond UX Restrictions: Holistic Driver Attention Support Framework.” Today’s CarUXRestrictions approach in Android Automotive is designed to improve safety by blocking certain interactions while driving. But when restrictions are too rigid, drivers look for workarounds, delay tasks until worse moments, or shift to other devices like phones — reducing the intended safety benefit. Our framework takes a more holistic approach by adapting to interaction pacing and driver attention in context. It provides pre-warnings, supports safer behavior, and escalates restrictions only when needed — helping balance driver safety with a more usable in-vehicle experience. This is already available in select VW Group vehicles, and we’ll have a live demonstrator at the event. We'll showcase how the framework, - Enables different user journeys to help redirect driver attention to the road. - Allows the sensitivity of the framework to be configured by a set of parameters. - Detects the co-driver and allows an override of the screen blocking.
