Here's a conversation we have often with manufacturers: "We didn't think our work qualified." Then we walk through what they've actually been doing. New alloy formulations that took 18 months to get right. Automated lines that required custom software and mechanical engineering to work in tandem. Quality inspection systems they built because nothing off the shelf could meet their spec. Every one of those projects had SR&ED-eligible work in it. The four things CRA actually looks for: A genuine attempt at technological advancement, uncertainty about whether the approach will work, a systematic method, and qualified people doing the work. That's most manufacturing R&D. It just hasn't been framed that way. Our Video 3 in the SR&ED for Manufacturers series walks through the eligibility criteria with concrete hard tech examples so you can start recognizing qualifying work when you see it. For years, manufacturers making major capital investments in R&D equipment ran into the same frustrating wall. The people doing the work? Eligible. The materials consumed in experiments? Eligible. The specialized machinery and test equipment used to run those experiments? Not eligible. That changed in March 2026. Bill C-15 received Royal Assent on March 26th, making the 2026 SR&ED enhancements official. For capital-intensive manufacturers and hard tech companies, these are the most significant changes to the program in over a decade: → Annual expenditure limit doubled to $6M → Capital equipment eligibility restored (retroactive to December 16, 2024) → New eligibility standards and claim timelines We made a short video breaking down what each change means in practice and why now is a good time to revisit your SR&ED strategy. Members of the Boast team came from across North America last week for Web Summit Vancouver. While the main event was stellar, a major highlight for us was this incredible 'meeting-of-the-minds' facilitated by Joel Hansen and the team at North House. Jack Newton and Ryan Holmes know intimately what it takes to build and scale a business, as well as how to navigate the slings-and-arrows of North America's tech ecosystem. Their insights provided true value to the founders in the room who share a passion for driving innovation and positive change. It's an ethos we share deeply here at Boast, as we aim to connect teams tackling truly challenging (and often risky) R&D with the capital and resources they deserve to see their ideas take flight. Thanks again to Rob Ironside and the whole League of Innovators Accelerator crew for facilitating an amazing kickoff and welcome us into the space with open arms.
Cheers to the founders in the room showing up every day to build something special in this world. 🥃 🍁 Excited to share a few photos captured by our friends at The Creative Solution from our event last week with Jack Newton, Ryan Holmes and Yvonne L.. From smiles to hugs, to side conversations, Aayush Kogar and his team captured everything and more from what we love to see at a North House event. For those who weren't able to join, my biggest takeaway was the reminder of how Jack and Ryan have showed up day after day for the last 2 decades to build something special. Remember, good things take time.

"We happily parted ways with some clients when we went cloud-first. And that was okay." 💡 Varun Sehgal CPA, CA (Think Accounting) on the hard decisions required when transforming from a traditional GTA firm to a cloud-first national practice. The pivot: 2017-2018, Think Accounting went fully cloud-based. Expanded from Greater Toronto Area to coast to coast across Canada. The result: They attracted innovation-driven companies in SaaS, medical tech, and e-commerce who didn't just tolerate this model—they preferred it. "For them, we're another plug-and-play model into their ecosystem. They don't need to build a large corporate accounting team." The ecosystem approach: "We cannot be expert in every industry. Could we hire a full-time valuations person? Perhaps. But our model is to plug and play firms like Boast for R&D because you guys have experts for software, medicine, manufacturing." Identifying SR&ED candidates: Green flags: "Are they writing code? Experimenting with manufacturing processes? Monthly or quarterly conversations naturally surface these." Red flags: "If somebody's just connecting Claude with their software, that's not R&D. Are you building something that moves Canada forward?" Critical misconception: "Sometimes we think SR&ED only means if you succeed. If you tried building something, tried the experiment, and it didn't work—that doesn't mean you're not eligible. The funding is not contingent on success." Fractional CFO = business personal trainer: "Some people know what to do, but you need that accountability partner. We look forward—where do we go from here?" The advice: "Just ask. Just open the conversation. Sometimes it's 'What I'm doing, is it eligible?' Sometimes it's 'What could I be doing?' If I know I'm 50-60 cents on the dollar out of pocket and the rest is Canada investing, that changes the mindset." 🎧 Full conversation here: https://lnkd.in/gGNhvSEJ #SREDTaxCredits #RnDCanada #CloudAccounting #InnovationFunding

Great few days at #WebSummitVancouver! So many exciting conversations with startups building innovative technologies across robotics, green tech, medtech, and sustainability. Amazing to see so much innovation focused on solving real-world challenges with passion and hard work. This is exactly why programs like the SR&ED tax credit exist: to help companies continue tackling technological uncertainties and growing. Thanks to our team, partners, and everyone we connected with throughout the summit. Boast Roynat Capital Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG)

Matthew Dillon and the LimitlessAI team are helping businesses streamline and accelerate analysis across the sales cycle. Paul Davenport stopped by to learn more bright and early during day 3 of Web Summit Vancouver, and the ethos at the heart of LimitlessAI resonates deeply with our goals at Boast. By helping teams capitalize on the data at their fingertips and dig a little deeper to understand their prospects’ real challenges, LimitlessAI empowers GTM teams to deliver more value to prospects at every step. Really enjoyed attending another Founder Poker Toronto night hosted by Derek Jouppi and Simran N. in Toronto! (4 year anniversary!) It is always a great group of founders coming together to connect, share ideas, and unwind over some hands of poker. Events like these are a reminder of how valuable the startup community is and how much can come from simply getting the right people in a room together. At Boast, we love working with founders and innovative companies that are building ambitious products and investing in R&D. We help companies take advantage of the Canadian SR&ED program, allowing teams to maximize their claims, reduce risk, and unlock funds they can reinvest back into growth! If you’re a founder scaling a product or engineering team I would love to hear about your previous experience with SRED. Or if you want to better understand what you may qualify for through SR&ED, I’d love to connect. #SR&ED #Boast #Innovation #R&D
