In some instances, it can be positive, like if a child makes friends who encourage them to adopt healthy habits or get good grades. Day-to-day life is full of countless simple actions - buttoning a shirt, walking across a room, picking something up off the floor. It is easy to take these for granted - until, suddenly, we can't do them. Occupational Therapists help people learn or relearn these tasks after injury, illness, disability, or age make them difficult or seemingly impossible. Thank you, OTs, for helping patients find control in their lives after setbacks!

Last week, as part of #StrokeAwarenessMonth, caregivers gathered to learn about the state of stroke research and care from Dr. Pablo Valdes, Attending Surgeon in Neurosurgery at Bassett Medical Center. 800,000 Americans have a stroke each year, and stroke emergency care has advanced in leaps and bounds over the last 30 years, increasing life expectancy and decreasing the chances of permanent disability following a stroke. Bassett Medical Center – which is already nationally recognized by the American Heart Association for providing high-quality stroke care – is expanding its interventional treatment options, allowing patients to receive care close to home when time makes a critical difference. #StrokeMonth

We are pleased to recognize Joon Shim, MD, MPH, FACS, Bassett Healthcare Network Surgeon and Director of our network’s General Surgery Residency Program, for the important work she is taking part in to promote surgical education, mentorship, and leadership development nationally. Dr. Shim is on the American College of Surgeons Committee on Medical Student Education, is serving as a Director-at-Large on the Association for Academic Surgery Foundation’s Board of Directors, is a Member-at-Large for the Association for Surgical Education, and was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery.
