Failure analysis doesn’t always deliver clear-cut answers. This week’s ASM Materials Minute features students Ethan Huart and Arthur Lecocq from Faculté Polytechnique de Mons as part of the #FAS 2025 Student Showcase. In their presentation on the corrosion of a copper thermowell, the team discovered the failure was likely caused by improper exposure to aggressive water from an untested source—not simple material degradation as initially suspected. A reminder that detailed investigations matter, especially when unknown variables complicate the analysis. 🎥 Watch the full presentation in ASM’s On-Demand Webinar Library. https://lnkd.in/e2dmNm23 #FailureAnalysis #Corrosion #MaterialsScience #webinar #ASMMaterialsMinute

📢 Webinar this Thursday! Check out the details below. 👇
If thermal constraints are part of your design challenges, our webinar this Thursday, May 21, at 11:00 a.m. Eastern, will provide practical direction grounded in engineering experience. In our new webinar, hosted by ASM International, technical expert Jeff Campbell will walk through how engineers can better align thermal and mechanical requirements using the right materials. This free session focuses on real-world application, not theory, with examples across metals, composites, and ceramics. Material selection decisions made early in design often determine whether thermal challenges are solved or amplified. Join us for "Solving Thermal Challenges Through Material Selection: A Practical Guide for Engineers". Register now: https://lnkd.in/g2T3PFjT #MaterialsScience #ThermalManagement #AdvancedMaterials

From the 1930s through the 1950s, 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 — the flagship publication of the American Society for Metals (now ASM International)—featured bold, distinctive cover designs. The artwork ranged from oil paintings and geometric abstractions to striking photography, all unified by a common thread: some reference, however stylized, to the processing or application of metals. We recently rediscovered these covers in the ASM archives. A number of striking examples appear in the latest issue of 𝘈𝘥𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘴 & 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴 magazine (the successor to 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴). You will want to check them out if you are a lover of mid-century design and metals technology. https://lnkd.in/g2_CWDv7 #AMP #MaterialsScience #Vintage #MidCenturyModern #EngineeringInnovation #MagazineCover
