Major findings! New research led by Lurie Children's Pediatric Surgery Division Head, Dr. Mehul Raval, shows that enhanced recovery protocols (ERPs) improves outcomes for kids undergoing gastrointestinal surgery. ERPs are interventions developed using input from clinicians, nurses, anesthesia teams, child psychologists, patient-families. Utilizing ERPs led to reduced opioid use and fewer complications, and children were also able to return to a regular diet more quickly—highlighting the beneficial role of ERPs in pediatric surgical outcomes. • To every member of Team Lurie Children’s who showed up at the start line of the Life Time Chicago Spring Half Marathon & 5K yesterday, congratulations on an incredible achievement! What you accomplish goes far beyond race day. You committed your time and energy to training, and you carried that same dedication into something even bigger by raising critical funds for our patients and families. Every early morning, every long run, and every step had a purpose behind it. Together, we raised almost $20,000. Because of you, 260,000 patients will receive support when it matters most. Thank you! • We are deeply honored to receive the 2026 American Hospital Association Dick Davidson NOVA Award in recognition of the Juvenile Justice Collaborative (JJC) — a community-driven program led by Lurie Children's in partnership with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office and the Circuit Court of Cook County. The JJC connects youth ages 12–18 who are first-time, non-violent offenders with the community-based services they need to move forward — from mental health support and mentoring to education, employment and basic needs. A recent evaluation found that 89% of participants had their charges dropped and reoffending odds were 44% lower compared to traditional approaches. This recognition belongs to every partner, provider, and young person who has been part of this work. Together, we are proving what's possible when communities invest in young people. • 🍎🖍️ 🔬📖This week we’re celebrating Lurie Children’s incredible team of School Services Coordinators, Education Liaisons, and Chicago Public School teachers whose impact reaches far beyond the classroom.   Every day, students are supported by our School Services and CPS teachers by staying connected to learning while in the hospital, creating a sense of normalcy during difficult moments, and building an essential bridge between the hospital and home. Education Liaisons help support students with complex medical needs by coordinating accommodations and advocating for individualized support within the school setting.   In addition to academics, our educators help patients feel seen, supported, confident, and empowered. Stories of students rediscovering their love for learning are a direct reflection of the team’s compassion and dedication.   Our educators continue to shape the future of hospital education through research, innovation, and national collaboration, presenting at conferences including ACIC, HEAL and CNOC to share best practices supporting students with chronic health needs across the country.   We, along with the patient families they support, are extremely grateful for the creativity, flexibility, advocacy, and care the team brings to their work every single day. • Happy Nurses Week! 💙 This week we celebrated our extraordinary nurses who show up every day with skill, compassion, patience and heart. Our nurses do so much more than provide care. They comfort families through difficult moments, advocate fiercely for their patients, celebrate milestones big and small, and help children feel safe, seen and supported during some of life’s hardest days. Whether at the bedside, in clinics, operating rooms, or behind the scenes supporting patient care, their impact reaches far beyond medicine. They are caregivers, educators, teammates, problem-solvers and a steady source of hope for the children and families who count on them. To every nurse at Lurie Children’s: thank you for the expertise, empathy and humanity you bring to your work, day in and day out. We are endlessly grateful for all that you do.

  • The multidisciplinary team who makes up the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Program at Lurie Children’s has given “a day in the life” a whole new meaning! A group of physicians, advanced care providers, nurses, clinical psychologists, dietitians and social workers from the program recently committed to participating in a formula-only diet for one week to show support for and solidarity with their patients. They took this “empathy exercise” as an opportunity to gain a better understanding of their IBD patients’ experience, and ultimately provide even greater, more-informed care. Some staff persevered all five days while others realized their limits more quickly, but all were given unique insights into what Exclusive Enteral Nutrition (EEN) – a therapeutic, formula-only diet lasting 6–12 weeks – actually feels like. While EEN is highly effective in reducing inflammation in IBD patients, helping them feel better and supporting a path to remission, the care team knows it’s challenging physically, socially and emotionally to disconnect from solid foods for such an extended period. Experiencing the therapy from the other side, even just briefly, only reinforced how strong and resilient their patients really are.
