There’s a new exhibit at the Truhlsen-Marmor Museum of the Eye in San Francisco! It explores the history of trachoma, a bacterial eye infection behind some of the nation’s first public health policies. The special exhibit explores the American story of immigration at Angel Island and Ellis Island, and the discovery of an antibiotic cure via worldwide public health efforts. This exhibit also features rare medical books, antique surgical tools, and fascinating glass photo slides. Trachoma: Bacteria, Immigration, and Public Health will be on display until Spring 2027. Eyelid sling may be indicated following a failed eyelid shortening procedure or when a patient has paralytic lower eyelid retraction. In this video, Dr. Guy Ben Simon shows how to create a sling from a long strip of fascia lata tissue (taken from above the knee) and attach it to first the medial canthal tendon and then the lateral orbital rim. A 45-year-old woman experienced bilateral Aspergillus endophthalmitis after toxic mushroom ingestion. The right eye underwent lensectomy, vitrectomies with silicone oil, and foldable capsular vitreous body (FCVB) (Guangzhou Vesber Biotechnology Co, Ltd) (A) implantation for recurrent retinal detachment. At 11 months, visual acuity was hand motion. Anterior imaging (B, C) confirmed proper FCVB positioning, with OCT (D) showing 299-μm capsule thickness. Fundus (E) revealed bare retinal pigment epithelium (orange) with residual peripapillary/nasal retina (“postage stamp”), traction strands, and FCVB loop (arrow). This approach uniquely provides sustained mechanical support for retina and globe structure, avoiding phthisis bulbi and long-term silicone oil complications. From “Foldable Capsular Vitreous Body in Aspergillus Endophthalmitis” by Yan Zhou, BS, Shi Feng, MD, Rongping Dai, MD. Published by Ophthalmology Retina online on October 22, 2025.
