National Public Works Week is a chance to recognize the essential work that keeps our communities moving—often quietly, but always with impact. From roads and utilities to water, wastewater, and public facilities, public works professionals help shape the places where we live, work, and play. We love public works because every project is an opportunity to make a direct, positive difference, like improving safety, supporting essential services, strengthening infrastructure, and helping communities thrive and grow. We’re proud to support public agencies and partner across disciplines to bring this work to life. Whether it’s replacing aging utilities, improving pedestrian comfort, fixing roads, or delivering cleaner, more reliable water, public works allows us to see the real‑world impact of our designs in the communities we serve. This week, and always, we’re grateful for the dedication, expertise, and collaboration of the public works professionals who keep our cities moving and our communities thriving. 👏

Growth is easy to see, but taking projects from concept to construction isn’t a linear path. At this year’s 11th Annual Growing SW Washington event, AKS Principal John Meier gave a peek behind the curtain at our ongoing private development projects and how we work with developers, jurisdictions, and project teams to move projects forward. The key takeaway? Choosing a partner based on trust will do more for your bottom line than choosing based on dollars ever will.

Great day at the BLOOM Festival in the City of Newport, Oregon, talking with the community about trolley possibilities, tourism mobility, and what it could mean to make moving around this beautiful coastal city a little easier, more connected, and more enjoyable. As part of the Newport Trolley Feasibility Study, we launched our first public outreach activity and had the chance to hear directly from residents, visitors, business owners, and local stakeholders about how they move through Newport today - what works, where the challenges are, and where better connections could make a real difference. One of the best parts of the day was watching people engage with the interactive map. Attendees placed stickers where they’d like to see improved tourism connections or potential trolley access, and the conversations that followed were thoughtful, energetic, and incredibly useful. Big credit to Heather Dee for developing a sharp, intuitive map exhibit that made it easy for people to jump in and share their thoughts, and to Alyssa Tolentino (Karnes) for helping bring the graphics and outreach materials to life. We were also fortunate to have the Yachats Area Trolley on-site, thanks to Bobbi Price and the City of Yachats (OR). Having a real trolley there gave people something tangible to react to, not just an idea on paper, but a glimpse of what a tourism-oriented circulation service could look and feel like in a coastal community. Huge thanks to Willow Walch, Discover Newport, and Greenhouse Collaboratives, for helping coordinate a successful outreach effort. This project is still in the feasibility stage. No routes, stops, or decisions have been made. But days like this matter. They help us understand what the community values, where people see opportunity, and how we can think creatively about mobility in Newport’s future. Excited to keep the conversation going as the study progresses. More outreach opportunities and a public survey are coming soon. #TransportationPlanning #PublicEngagement #Tourism #Transit #NewportOregon #UrbanPlanning #CommunityEngagement #Mobility #Trolley #Transportation #AKS

Another successful project in the books! The Mariposa Causeway is officially open to the public following a ribbon-cutting ceremony this past Saturday. A huge thank you to Kevin Oppenlander, P.E., Terry Keyes, and Peter Brandom from the @City of Cornelius for partnering with AKS Engineering & Forestry and our design team (Miller Consulting Engineers, Inc. & GRI). We’re proud to have delivered this elevated boardwalk for the Laurel Woods community, further expanding the city’s park and trail system.

Before the season kicks off, our Construction Management Team came together for a full day of hands-on learning and real-world insights at our annual Construction Management Bootcamp. We asked attendees: What was the impact of CM Bootcamp this year? It’s safe to say that this year’s event delivered!👏

Our interns have officially arrived, and we couldn't be more excited to welcome them! 🎉 Before they dive in, we thought there was no better way to kick things off than with some real talk from the people who were in their shoes just last year. Once a year, teammates from across 12+ AKS offices come together to learn, connect, and celebrate the people who make our firm what it is. Camp AKS is about investing in one another—today and for the future. 💙 This year’s retreat was especially meaningful as AKS celebrates its 30th anniversary as a company. Having colleagues from all our offices gathered in one place was a powerful reminder of what has carried us through three decades: strong relationships, shared values, and a community built around people first. Take a look at a few moments captured throughout the day at Camp AKS 2026. We’re already looking forward to next year! 🎉

Growing stronger communities, one tree at a time. 🌳 In celebration of Arbor Day, AKS team members are stepping into the community to do what we do best: care for the spaces where people live, learn, and grow. Year after year, our team proudly partners with local organizations to help restore and strengthen our urban forest while investing in the long-term health of our communities. Tree planting is about more than adding greenery. It’s about environmental stewardship, long-term sustainability, and creating resilient, built-to-last places. When these events take place at local schools, they give us the opportunity to get hands-on alongside students—sharing what we know, learning together, and helping inspire the next generation to understand why trees matter and how the care we take today shapes tomorrow. We’re proud to support Arbor Day and to give back in ways that reflect our commitment to the environment and the communities we serve. 🌱 ➡️ Thank you to the City of Sherwood and Hawks View Elementary for partnering with our team on this year’s tree-planting effort!
