Florida’s engineers are protecting water quality across the Sunshine State. Their technical work, from planning and design to water quality monitoring to the development of pollution reduction targets, serve as the basis for strategies to increase protection for this valued resource. Recent updates to the #BasinManagementActionPlans (BMAPs) provide a framework with a comprehensive set of solutions to reduce pollution in the state’s water bodies. BMAP development and implementation rely on the technical work of engineers across Florida, from planning and design to the monitoring of waterways and nutrient pollution levels. Recently, Florida #GovernorRonDeSantis and other dignitaries held a ribbon cutting for the C-43 West Basin Storage Reservoir, an engineering project that reduces the volume of lake discharges in wet seasons and provides freshwater flow to the estuary in dry ones. After Category 5 #HurricaneMichael damaged or destroyed most of the buildings and structures on Tyndall Air Force Base Florida in 2018, HENSEL PHELPS was contracted by the US Army Corps of Engineers to complete the Tyndall AFB Dormitories Complex. In a first for the USACE Southeast Region, the project team used a #DesignBuild method. PAGE, now Stantec, served as the architect of the project, which was completed in April 2025. “After the experience that the Corps of Engineers had with us at the Tyndall Dormitories and our teams, they now agree 100% that they want to try to do as many design-build delivery methods as possible going forward,” said Chad Neukirch, DBIA of Hensel Phelps. The project earned an Award of Merit from Engineering News-Record's 2025 Best Projects list. It’s a path for Duv-All, and Jacksonville’s #EmeraldTrail is connecting downtown and communities. Some portions, like the 1.3-mile LaVilla Link, are already complete. When the Emerald Tail is fully complete, its 30+ miles of trail will connect at least 14 historic neighborhoods to downtown, Hogans Creek, McCoys Creek and the St. Johns River. The trail will link to two colleges, three hospitals, 16 schools and the area’s Regional Transportation Center, while 13 additional schools and 17 parks will be located less than three blocks from the trail. Day 1 of the 2026 ACEC Florida | Florida Department of Transportation Project Management Conference brought a record high attendance of Florida transportation professionals together for a full day of knowledge sharing and meaningful discussions centered around this year’s theme, “Driving Progress. Connecting People.” Hosted at the Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld, attendees participated in engaging sessions on forecasting and performance, project leadership, CEI collaboration, workforce development, succession planning, and strategies to prepare the next generation of transportation professionals. Throughout the day, the conference highlighted how strong partnerships and shared expertise continue to drive progress for Florida’s transportation industry while connecting the people who help deliver it.
