Earlier this week a letter that we had written to Scottish MPs, initially privately, was published in the media, and we want to clarify our position. In January, we were informed by Wave Energy Scotland (WES) that there was no funding for their organisation in the 2026/27 budget. We have tried to keep this situation confidential and manage it directly with WES, Scottish Government and other key stakeholders. However, during that engagement and with our permission, the letter was included as public evidence in support of budget discussions, and subsequently picked up by the media. As referenced in our letter, we appreciate and respect that budgets are tight and difficult decisions need to be made. But now after ten years, and with historic support from WES, we are a leader in wave energy, on the cusp of commercialisation, and have a business plan and commercial traction to support the sector around the world. The WES funding that we have is contractually agreed, but when Scottish Government made the cuts to the draft budget, how those contracts would be fulfilled was thrown into doubt. We have been assured that the teams at WES and Highland and Islands Enterprise (HIE) are in discussion with Scottish Government as to how those contractual obligations will be met - and it sounds like progress is being made. Finally, I want to reassure our partners that we have the funding to fulfil our present contracts -- and that, for the future, we remain optimistic that Scottish Government will do the right thing. If Mocean, with Scottish Government’s support, can achieve what we set out in our business plan, it will make a huge impact on the marine energy industry in Scotland and globally, and support Scotland’s continued leadership in the sector.
