About us
Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle first dreamt up House of Hackney from their home in 2011. Today the husband-and-wife team has grown into a family of artists, designers, producers and collaborators. Driven by our founding principles of creativity with purpose, integrity in our actions and compassion for people and planet, we continue to build upon the House, creating unique and inspiring designs that will stand the test of time. Our Housemates are innovators who see the world differently and strive to make a difference within it. Each one is chosen and cherished for the skills, talents and characteristics that make them unique. In our House, we care for the wellbeing of our team; that is why we offer a more flexible approach to working and operate a four-day week over the summer period, and a 4pm finish in the winter. As well as caring for our colleagues, we also care deeply about our eternal muse - Mother Nature. House of Hackney is proud to be certified as a B Corp™; a business that meets the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability, and we are partnered with the World Land Trust, the international conservation charity that safeguards our most vital natural ecosystems and threatened habitats, acre by acre. From our London flagship St Micheal’s Clergy, based in the creative heart of the capital, to our New York showroom, our House is a place where imagination and collaboration can flourish – where everyone is accepted, all ideas are encouraged, and magic really does happen. There may be no place like home…but in our House, there’s no place like work. Our House is a home for everyone. We stand for diversity, equality and inclusion. We are an equal opportunities employer and ensure our House remains a safe and fair space for all who come through its doors.

She’s wise. She’s wild. She’s WONDER-ful… Meet Mother Nature, the muse, source and designer of our new apothecary collection. WONDER GARDEN is more than a herbalist range, it’s an invitation to fall back in love with the joy, wisdom and wonder of the natural world. Harnessing the ancient art of herbalism and the flow of the seasons, each carefully crafted element is designed to support wellbeing throughout the year, made with organic botanicals and potent plants plucked straight from the source - Mother Nature. Nature’s gifts from the Garden arrive with the seasons, providing us with the vitality and sustenance we need, exactly when we need it. Each seasonal collection is anchored in a tree essence, and crafted with seasonal organic herbs and botanicals, harvested at their most potent. Working with renowned herbal practitioner Harriet Coleman to be a part of your daily ritual, WONDER GARDEN transforms ordinary moments into extraordinary moments. By seeing the wold through the eyes of WONDER, we can reawaken our relationship with Nature, and with ourselves, through attunement, awe and respect. Yesterday our Co-Founder Frieda joined The Profiteers Podcast to talk about our regenerative journey and putting Nature at the heart of our business. Thank you Christopher for giving these important collective conversations a platform.
🌿 In this episode of Journey to #Regeneration, I speak with Frieda Gormley, co-founder of House of Hackney, about how a design-led interiors brand has evolved into a business explicitly oriented around #restoration and regeneration. 💡 Some of the key takeaways include: 🌎 Sustainability is no longer enough. Reducing harm is insufficient given the scale of ecological crisis; regeneration requires actively improving natural and social systems. 🌱 Business depends on nature—whether it recognizes it or not. Materials, supply chains, and economic activity are embedded in natural systems, making ecological degradation a direct business risk. 🍃 Nature can be embedded in governance. House of Hackney’s “Mother Nature” board role gives nature a voice in business decision-making. 📉 Growth must be reconsidered. Aggressive growth targets often conflict with regenerative principles; flourishing does not always require scale. 🧠 Culture and governance both matter. Systemic change requires structural reform, but also new mindsets, stories, and organizational practices. 🚀 SMEs can lead system change. Smaller, more agile firms can experiment with regenerative models and influence broader industry transformation. 🎧 Listen to the full conversation here: https://lnkd.in/eN4kWKvk Executive Education at Cambridge Judge Business School B Lab UK Charmian (Char) Love

We are deeply honoured to receive The King's Awards for Enterprise for Sustainability. To be recognised in this way is both a moment of validation of the progressive work we are doing as a team and as a business, and also as a moment of reflection. At House of Hackney, our journey has always been guided by a belief that business can - and needs to - exist in relationship with Nature. In this, we feel a genuine sense of kinship with His Royal Highness King Charles, whose lifelong, deeply personal relationship with plants, soil, and the living world has helped bring ecological thinking from the margins into the mainstream. We are so grateful that he uses his platform to amplify the message that we must listen more closely to Nature - that we are not separate from it, but part of it. It reflects a shared understanding: that the health of our economy can never be separated from the health of the natural world. And yet, this recognition also comes at a time when we must collectively raise our sights. “Sustainability” - the act of doing less harm - is no longer enough. The future calls us towards regeneration: towards actively restoring, renewing, and participating in the healing of the systems we are part of. It asks us for creativity, courage and imagination, but it also offers more in return: a world that is richer, more resilient, and more alive. This is the journey we are on. From sustaining to restoring. From offsetting to insetting. From reducing our impact to creating positive ones. From seeing Nature as a resource to recognising that we are Nature. It is our hope that in the not-too-distant future, awards such as this will evolve to reflect that shift - celebrating not only those who sustain, but those who regenerate. With gratitude, and with a deep commitment to what lies ahead, Frieda Gormley & Javvy M Royle

APPLICATIONS CLOSE 11th MAY! There's still time to apply for The William Morris Art Futures Bursary, a new initiative supporting the next generation of artists in the London Boroughs of Hackney and Waltham Forest. Inspired by William Morris’s values of art for all and the transformative power of creativity, the bursary will provide £10,000 in funding for 16–25-year-olds with creative potential who face barriers to accessing education, training, materials or mentorship. A partnership between House of Hackney, William Morris Gallery, IntoUniversity and Future Formed London Borough of Waltham Forest, the programme will connect young people with local opportunities in art, craft and design, helping them develop their skills and confidence while building community connections. “We’re so excited to launch this bursary with our friends at the William Morris Gallery and IntoUniversity, to help open doors for the next generation of artists in our home of East London. Inspired by Morris’s beliefs and dedication to craft, it’s about giving young creatives the chance to pursue their dreams, even when the system feels closed to them. At House of Hackney, we’ve always believed that business can be a force for good; that profit, at its best, is energy that should circulate back into creativity, community and Nature. This bursary is one way of putting that belief into practice.” - Frieda Gormley, House of Hackney Co-Founder Learn more at the link below, and please reach out if you have any questions. https://lnkd.in/eg7HF84D
