About us

The Energy Institute (EI) is the chartered professional membership body for people who work across the world of energy. Our purpose is creating a better energy future for our members and society by accelerating a just global energy transition to net zero. We do this by: -Attracting, developing and equipping the diverse future energy workforce -Informing energy decision-making through convening expertise and advice -Enabling industry and consumers to make energy lower carbon, safer and more efficient A registered charity, incorporated by Royal Charter in 2003, the EI is licensed by the Engineering Council (UK) to offer Chartered, Incorporated and Engineering Technician status to engineers, and by the Society for the Environment to award Chartered Environmentalist status. We are also unique in granting Chartered Energy Manager status. The EI was set up in 2003 as a result of a merger between the Institute of Petroleum (IP) and the Institute of Energy (InstE). Both Institutes had a proud and distinguished heritage developed over many years supporting their particular energy sectors. Increasingly these sectors have converged, creating an integrated global energy market which has been mirrored by the development of the Energy Institute - established to address both the depth and breadth of the subject. Today , the EI is home to a range of collaborative initiatives, including the G+ Global Offshore Wind Health and Safety Organisation, SafetyOn and POWERful Women. We host the annual International Energy Week, EI Awards, publish New Energy World Magazine and the Energy Barometer, and provide the Toolbox web app helping the energy workforce learn lessons from incidents and get home safe.

  • 🌍#NewEnergyWorld 🗣️Comment – The Local Plan process, and the wider planning system in the UK, could do more to give greater, enduring certainty as to where energy development is suitable in a Local Plan area. Rather than searching for broad areas suitable for energy development, Local Plans could adopt a site specific, evidence-based, allocation process specifically for energy infrastructure, argues Anthony Greally, Head of Advanced Energy, Lichfields UK. ➡️Read more: https://ow.ly/msNy50Z1HnY

Connecting people who work across the world of energy and providing them with the community, tools, and training to succeed is at the core of what we do, and we're grateful to have provided the new Chair of the EI Energy Storage Working Group Rami Osman with the opportunity to further professionally develop. As Rami notes, the Energy Institute 'brings together people with deep practical, technical and policy experience, and provide a space where industry can collaborate on useful guidance, share lessons learned, and support safer and more effective progress across the sector.' We're proud to have him on one of our committees 👏 . If you're interested in getting more involved in the industry, have a look at what EI membership can give you and your employees: https://lnkd.in/erGDTkB6 and read more about Rami's experience below 👇

When I first read up on the Energy Institute years ago, I had no idea how much of an impact the organisation, its people and its professional community would go on to have on my career. Over the years, EI resources, training, tools, certifications, events, networks and professional communities have consistently helped me build knowledge, explore ideas, and stay connected to the wider energy sector as it continues to evolve. One of the most rewarding parts of that experience has been the opportunity to give back through contributions to EI working groups. They bring together people with deep practical, technical and policy experience, and provide a space where industry can collaborate on useful guidance, share lessons learned, and support safer and more effective progress across the sector. I am really pleased to have been given the opportunity to take on the role of Chair of the Energy Storage Working Group, which sits under the EI Power Systems Committee. Energy storage is becoming increasingly important to modern power systems, and its deployment brings important questions around safety, planning, environmental management, grid integration, skills, operations and lifecycle responsibility. Recent published work by the ESWG includes guidance on safe electrical work practices for large-scale lithium-ion battery storage, alongside research into the decommissioning, disposal and recycling of lithium-ion batteries, with further work expected in Q3 2026 on environmental assessment and management of BESS.(links in the comments) I am looking forward to supporting the group’s work, engaging with the challenges and opportunities ahead, and contributing towards outputs that industry can leverage and that someone, somewhere entering the energy industry may one day read, learn from, and bookmark, just as I once did. So a huge thank you to Energy Institute, the Power Systems Committee, Stuart King, Amy-Jane Lewis, and the members of the Energy Storage Working Group for the opportunity to contribute. #EnergyStorage #BESS #PowerSystems #ElectricalSafety #GridInfrastructure #Engineering #KnowledgeSharing #IndustryCollaboration #BatteryEnergyStorage

  • Our Aviation Jet Fuel Training course touched down in London this week for its final day! ✈️ Across three engaging days, delegates explored the essentials of aviation fuel, from jet engine operations and fuel properties to safe handling, storage, and supply management. This year’s programme also introduced a brand-new module focused on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and its growing role in the industry. Yesterday, participants visited Farnborough Airport for an exclusive tour of the fuel storage facilities, including a live field test demonstration. The experience brought classroom learning to life, giving delegates a behind-the-scenes look at fuel farm operations, safety procedures, and the practical realities of aviation fuel management. More than just technical training, this programme creates a valuable space for aviation professionals to connect, exchange expertise, and strengthen industry best practices together. Trying to figure out where to specialise in energy? 🤔 This is a challenge that Emily knows well. “In the beginning, it’s really difficult to find a niche that you’d like to specialise in... that was quite challenging for me” Meet Emily Ran F. (Student Member). Her experience with the EI began through the Energy Institute Young Professionals Network London Branch, not only expanding her community but also building her confidence. Through attending events and engaging with young and experienced professionals, she has gained more clarity about her path in energy. She is now completing her studies at Imperial College London, has her sights set on becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng), and hopes to seek support from the EI on the journey to get there. Watch to hear more of Emily’s journey, and discover how to become a free student member: https://lnkd.in/eC9x5ur6 #YourEnergy
