Extreme heat. Flooding. Drought. This week's report from the Climate Change Committee on A Well-Adapted UK, sets out independent, expert advice on how we can protect the people and places we love - and prepare for a future where temperatures exceeding 40°C becomes the norm. Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/ezcrRGDM Climate change is the biggest risk to health in the UK going forward.  From grassroots sport to everyday life, rising temperatures are stopping people from doing the things that give them purpose and joy, with serious consequences for physical and mental health. Hear from Emma Pinchbeck FEI from the Climate Change Committee and Dom Goggins from the British Association for Sustainable Sport on why adaptation matters now. #WellAdaptedUK #ClimateAdaptation #ClimateAndHealth #ExtremeHeat

📣 Our ‘A Well‑Adapted UK’ report is now live.  How do we protect our way of life from the biggest climate risks we face today?  Baroness Brown, Chair of the Adaptation Committee, says: “Our lives, our landscapes and our homes are under increasing pressure from the changing climate. But we are not powerless. In an increasingly unstable world, being well adapted to climate change is fundamental to securing our food, energy and economic security. "This report carries a message of hope. The solutions already exist, and proven technologies are available now to help the UK adapt effectively.”   The Committee recommends government focus on: 🪭 Better cooling. 🌊 Stronger flood protection. 💧 A more secure water supply. These are the most critical priorities to address the three biggest climate risks: heat, flooding and drought. Our analysis shows the cost of inaction far outweighs the cost of acting now.  Change is urgently needed to protect the people and places that we love.   🎥 Watch our explainer video featuring Baroness Brown Julia King DBE FREng FRS FMedSci, Emma Pinchbeck FEI, Dr Richard Millar: https://lnkd.in/ee_dudFD 📄 Read the report: https://lnkd.in/ezcrRGDM

Today, the Climate Change Committee advises the government on how to prepare for the climate impacts we know are coming. Advice includes:  - Cooling in hospitals and care homes by 2035 - Cooling in schools by 2050 - More flood defences - both natural and man made  - More reservoirs, and better movement of water around the country The great news is that none of the solutions we need are beyond our ability. We know how to do this stuff - we don’t have to accept a scarier, more uncertain, less comfortable state of being. It is possible to protect the people and places we love. There is no piece of advice I’m prouder of working on than this one. Nothing that’s felt so timely. Nothing that’s felt so hopeful. Read it (or watch the video summary), question us, challenge us - this is just the start of a conversation about how we create a well adapted UK.    https://lnkd.in/eMXdUuk4

  • 🔊 “We’ll hit that price parity point around this year for the largest cars through to about 2028 for the smallest cars. And that puts us on the cusp of, we believe, a tipping point, where the EV becomes the natural choice for someone buying a new car.” Nigel Topping, CMG, Chair of the Committee and Dr Eoin Devane, Carbon Budgets Team Leader, gave evidence to the Transport Committee on the electric vehicle transition in Parliament yesterday. • Our latest report - supplementary analysis of the Seventh Carbon Budget – shows that energy losses could be halved by 2050. In a Net Zero energy system, the value of losses falls to £30 billion per year, compared with £60 billion a year today. Why? Because low-carbon technologies like electric vehicles and heat pumps are more efficient, meaning they require less energy to meet the same level of demand. ⚡ Read the full analysis here: https://lnkd.in/ekADm_9Q

  • Our CEO Emma Pinchbeck FEI spoke to The Telegraph this weekend about the current energy crisis⚡ The biggest levers the Government can pull to cut carbon emissions are on heating and transport, where electric technologies will ultimately be more efficient to run and can reduce our exposure to oil and gas prices. We need to spend a lot more time thinking about demand. That is the more straightforward way to help make the UK resilient to future price shocks.

  • 📢 We’re thrilled to share three new appointments to the Committee announced today by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the Devolved Governments. Our new Committee members, who will join in April, are leaders in climate policy, sustainable agriculture, and environmental governance. Please join us in welcoming: • Professor Laura Diaz Anadon 👋 • Emily Norton 👋 • Professor Andrew Jordan 👋 “At a time when innovation is vital to unlocking climate ambition and economic opportunity for the UK, drawing on a broad range of practical expertise will help ensure our analysis remains robust and relevant.” – CCC Chair Nigel Topping, CMG. Really chuffed with the attention and coverage this report has got - thank you for all your engagement. Given the current geopolitical situation, it's no surprise that the language around the cost of fossil fuel impacts has resonated the most. But I want to give a little shout out to my favourite stat: when we get to Net Zero, energy losses are HALVED. We will waste less. Electric technology is just more efficient. Efficiencies may not be the most headline worthy topic (trust me, I've pitched it A LOT), but it's certainly a balance sheet one. Huge shout out to the analysts that led this: James Richardson, Miranda Schroder, Esther Harris, Eoin Devane, Rachel Hay and Adam Khan and to Rachel Sewell for creating a media storm out of a document called 'supplementary analysis'.

New CCC report 📝 Today we have published new analysis building on the Committee's advice on the UK’s Seventh Carbon Budget. Our conclusions about the cost of decarbonising the UK and impacts on energy security were tested against different scenarios. We found that: • One fossil fuel price shock could cost the UK more than the entire additional cost of the transition to Net Zero. • The benefits of Net Zero far outweigh the costs. For every pound spent on Net Zero, the benefits outweigh this by 2.2 to 4.1 times. • Energy losses are halved compared to today. Losses in a Net Zero system are valued at £30 billion per year, compared to £60 billion a year in today’s energy system. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/ekADm_9Q
