    The engineers who will build the next generation of Data Center campuses don't exist yet. Not as a defined talent profile. SMR-adjacent Data Centers are coming. The first campuses co-located with small modular reactors will need engineers who understand both worlds: NRC compliance and IST protocols. Radiation safety and BMS controls. Nuclear QA and commissioning 100MW+ of critical IT load. Right now, these are two completely separate talent markets. Nuclear engineers don't think of themselves as Data Center candidates. Commissioning managers don't have nuclear safety on their radar.     Google is in talks with SpaceX to put data centres in orbit. That's not a moonshot. It's a constraint signal. When a hyperscaler seriously evaluates low Earth orbit as a build site, it tells you what's already binding on the ground. Power. Grid. Water. Community consent. And the engineers to run any of it. Every workaround the sector has tried, nuclear PPAs, liquid cooling, Tier-2 builds, has solved one constraint and created a hiring brief the industry hasn't grown the talent for yet. Nuclear-coupled campuses need engineers fluent in two safety regimes. Liquid-cooled AI clusters need thermal specialists who think in workloads, not plant rooms. Orbital prototypes will need people who can commission a payload from 400 kilometres away. None of those role profiles existed when most of the industry's job specs were written. The new issue of The Build-Out walks through what each pivot does to the hiring brief, and why generalist recruitment now produces CVs that look right and candidates who can't do the work.     Google can't find enough power, land, or cooling on Earth. So they called SpaceX. Google is in talks with SpaceX to launch Project Suncatcher, a constellation of orbital satellites carrying its TPUs. First two prototypes targeted for early 2027. This is what the binding constraint on AI infrastructure actually looks like… Capex isn't the bottleneck. Silicon isn't the bottleneck. The physical inputs to running a Data Center, power, real estate, water, cooling, are running out. It's the same conversation we have every week with hyperscalers, MEP contractors, and Power & Cooling OEMs. The shortage everyone talks around is people. Engineers who can design liquid cooling at AI rack densities. Commissioning leads who hand over capacity on schedule. Senior operators who run mission-critical sites once they go live. If we're seriously talking about putting Data Centers in orbit, we should be just as serious about the talent shortage that's still binding the ones on the ground.     The Data Center industry has a maths problem nobody's solving with salary increases alone. 40% of your workforce plans to leave. Only 15% of applicants are qualified to replace them. A third of technical talent is approaching retirement. And 51% of operators already can't find the people they need. That's not a hiring challenge. It's a structural workforce contraction in a sector that needs to double capacity by 2030. Most operators respond by raising salaries. It's not working. The 40% planning to leave aren't citing pay. They're citing burnout, limited development, and poor work-life balance. You can't outbid those problems. Retention deserves the same rigour as recruitment.     Every Data Center programme has a capital investment plan, a project portfolio, and a delivery timeline agreed with investors. Almost none of them have a workforce plan built to the same standard. That's how a $200 million build stalls because 8 commissioning engineers can't be found. The capital was planned. The steel was planned. The people weren't. The hiring conversation starts when the programme is already mobilising, not when the capital is committed. By then you're competing with every other operator who made the same mistake and accepting candidates you'd have passed on 6 months earlier. The operators who avoid this treat workforce planning as a capital planning discipline. Audit commitments. Map gaps by discipline and geography. Phase hiring to the build schedule.
