An icon of Madrid's architectural heritage, Los Cubos is a landmark office space characterised by natural light, image and movement. After several years of disuse, the building has undergone a significant transformation to become a space at the forefront of new ways of working. While working on the design, sustainability and well-being of users as fundamental pillars in the refurbishment of the structure, our challenge was to maintain the distinctive geometry of the original building while enhancing its character and improving its energy performance and user comfort. #Architecture #Brutalism #Sustainbility

How does the energy transition really unfold across Europe? Not in one way. Not in one place. But through a series of local systems, decisions, and projects that add up to something much larger. Jose Cubillo Capuz, our Energy Business Leader in Spain, reflects on a recent decarbonisation project for repsol, and the role of integrated, end-to-end building and energy expertise in enabling complex transitions. #EnergySystems #EnergyTransition #Infrastructure

How do we design better cities? Recorded live during our recent 80th anniversary event in London, this special episode of Monocle’s The Urbanist brings together perspectives from city leadership, innovation and design. Featuring contributions from Jerome Frost, Hilde Tonne, Anna König Jerlmyr, Raj Patel and Thomas Heatherwick (Heatherwick Studio and Humanise.org). Together, they explore what it takes to shape more liveable, resilient places and the role long-term thinking will play in addressing the challenges ahead. LocHal shows how industrial heritage can be transformed into a shared civic asset at the heart of a growing city. We have transformed the vast historic hall into an adaptive, mixed-use knowledge hub. The original scale, openness and material character of the building have been retained, creating an inclusive space designed for learning, exchange and everyday use. LocHal is a catalyst for local regeneration and shows how adaptive reuse can deliver lasting social and cultural value, turning a once-inaccessible industrial structure into a vibrant public living room for the city. Delivering highly integrated design in a sensitive coastal environment requires close collaboration across disciplines. We provided structural and building services engineering for NOT A HOTEL ISHIGAKI EARTH, a private villa on Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, Japan, designed by Sou Fujimoto. The project is defined by a circular plan set into the landscape, minimising visual impact while opening up long views to the surrounding coastline. The architectural concept called for large, uninterrupted spaces and a high level of integration between structure, services, and environment. Working within the island’s subtropical climate, our approach focused on performance, durability, and coordination: -Structural systems designed to support open spans while responding to seismic and typhoon conditions -Building services integrated within the architecture to maintain a clear spatial expression -Environmental strategies tailored to heat, humidity, and marine exposure -Coordination across disciplines to ensure constructability and long-term resilience The outcome is a project where engineering supports the architectural intent through careful integration and technical resolution. Our coastlines, rivers and cities have been shaped by natural processes over thousands of years. In our Arup lecture at this year's Edinburgh Science Festival, Dr Mark Fletcher FREng explored how climate change is now altering these processes faster than our assumptions about risk and resilience can keep up with: https://lnkd.in/enQHK3_m Where do you think long-term impact of climate change is most underestimated today? Why retrofit and how is retrofit relevant to my industry? “Retrofit is relevant across all sectors of buildings” says Retrofit Leader, Mike Edwards. With reuse and circular economy becoming the norm, there has been no better time to decide to retrofit. Retrofit is no longer a niche strategy - it’s a necessity. Find out more in our latest article from our Global Retrofit Leader, Steve Fernandez who discusses why retrofit is the smart, sustainable option, here: https://bit.ly/42h1qvL #Retrofit #Decarbonisation #WeAreArup

What defines cutting-edge stadium design? Since 2005, Munich's Allianz Arena, with a 66,000 capacity, has served as the home for Bayern München and TSV 1860, and hosted the 2006 World Cup opening ceremony. Collaborating with Alpine and Herzog de Meuron Architects, we delivered both structural engineering and sports architecture, helping to shape a three-tier seating bowl that provides excellent sightlines and an immersive matchday atmosphere, bringing fans closer to the action. The iconic design features a reinforced concrete structure, a steel latticework roof, and a dynamic, illuminated facade that changes colours based on the home team. Delivering the water transition is widely acknowledged as being essential for future water security. Making it happen, at pace and at scale, is where the challenge lies. At the Global Water Summit 2026, our experts will focus on the practical challenges facing the water sector as it adapts to climate extremes, rising energy demand and tighter capital conditions. Across the programme, our contributions will explore: - how digital and data-led approaches can move urban water resilience from concept to implementation - which financing models are needed to deliver the water transition in a more constrained investment landscape - how partnership-led infrastructure models can enable complex water projects to proceed with confidence Connect with us at Global Water Summit 2026, 18 to 20 May, in Madrid. #Water #Infrastructure #Resilience #WaterTransition

The choices facing cities, infrastructure and organisations are more complex than ever - shaped by competing priorities, tight constraints and long‑term consequences. That’s why design is not just a discipline for us, it’s how we think. We bring the right minds together early, uncover opportunity within constraints, and turn ambition into outcomes that are practical, resilient and enduring.
