One of the things that comes up time and again with trading teams is that hiring plans tend to focus heavily on revenue-generating roles - what’s going to drive performance from day one. What gets overlooked is the infrastructure that actually allows those teams to operate effectively once they’re in place. When this client expanded into the UAE, the brief was focused on front office hiring - Quant Researchers and Portfolio Managers to build out the trading function. As we got closer to launch, a gap became clear. There was no Trade Operations leadership in place locally. Without it, onboarding those hires and moving to live trading would have been slower and more complex than planned. This wasn’t part of the original roadmap, but it needed solving quickly. Given how closely we’d worked with the business, we understood the environment well enough to act without starting from scratch. We introduced a TradeOps Lead already in Dubai, someone we knew and trusted, who could step in and build the function from the ground up. It wasn’t a broad search, just a well-timed, well-informed introduction. They joined, set up the TradeOps capability, and removed a key blocker to scaling the team and getting the desk operational. It’s a good example of where being close to the detail makes the difference - spotting what’s missing, not just delivering on what’s been asked for.
