Our CEO Tom van Aken will speak at the opening session of EUBCE - European Biomass Conference & Exhibition this week. EUBCE is one of Europe’s key forums connecting industry, policy and research in the bio-based economy. EUBCE has traditionally focused on biomass for energy and fuels. Increasingly, however, the conversation is broadening to include the role of renewable carbon in materials, and the need to create a level playing field between these applications.   At Avantium, we believe this shift is essential. We were pleased to welcome a delegation from the Republic of Korea, including representatives from the Korea Packaging Recycling Cooperative (KPRC) and a variety of brand owners, to Avantium this week. During the visit, we exchanged perspectives on the transition to more sustainable packaging systems, with a focus on the plant-based and circular material PEF, branded as releaf® by avantium. We introduced Avantium’s FDCA/PEF technology, and discussed how innovation, policy and industry collaboration can work together to accelerate change. We also had a valuable discussion on Extended Producer Responsibility (#EPR) and the role it can play in driving circularity, as well as on the #recyclability of PEF within existing recycling systems. Sometimes strategy is also about letting go. This week we announced the sale of our Ray Technology intellectual property to UPM. A technology that has been with Avantium since the early days and one we are genuinely proud of. So why sell something good? Because focus matters. The Ray technology has strong commercial potential in bio based glycols like MEG and MPG, but bringing it to full commercial scale requires time, capital and attention. Avantium made a clear choice to direct those towards scaling our FDCA technology and accelerating the roll out of PEF (under the brand name releaf® by avantium). We are pleased to see Ray move into the hands of UPM, a strong and trusted industrial partner with the resources to take it forward faster than we could today. They have built a large biorefinery in Leuna, converting woody biomass to biobased chemicals, such as glycols. This transaction gives the Ray technology a great future and allows us to stay fully focused on ours. This step is not about the transaction itself. It is about sharpening our priorities and aligning everything we do with building a successful, industrial scale business in renewable polymers. Can sustainable polymers truly combine high performance with circularity? 🌿 At Avantium, we are developing #PEF (polyethylene furanoate), known under the brand name releaf® by avantium, a next-generation polyester produced from the bio-based building block 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (#FDCA). 🌟 Compared to conventional fossil-based PET, PEF offers significantly improved barrier properties against oxygen and CO₂, together with improved moisture barrier performance. I just got back from Milan Design Week and the energy was real. Craft feels radical in a world of AI and fast furniture. Brands are building stunning installations. Artisans are being celebrated. But walking through Milan, one question kept surfacing: how much of this actually reaches the market? The good news? Is it really possible to have a 100% plant-based polyester with superior barrier performance? 🟢 Yes — PEF (polyethylene furanoate), with the brand name releaf® by avantium, produced from the bio-based building block 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (#FDCA), is exactly that. Derived from renewable plant-based sources, it offers a sustainable alternative to its fossil-based counterpart, PET, while delivering significantly improved barrier properties against oxygen, CO₂, and moisture. It is recyclable and designed to be compatible with existing polyester (PET) recycling streams and is driving innovation in high-performance, sustainable packaging.
