It was a pleasure to welcome the CLEXM.EU #MarieCurie Doctoral Network consortium to Dublin this week for a workshop and project conference focused on the future of cryo-correlative imaging workflows. The Doctoral Candidates presented impressive research projects, each demonstrating how #SoftXray Microscopy integrated into correlative imaging workflows [we call it #CLEXM] can be used to tackle important biological questions across multiple scales of resolution. It was inspiring to see the breadth of scientific applications being explored and the enthusiasm of the next generation of researchers in this rapidly developing field. A particular highlight was the keynote presentation from Prof. Roland Fleck of King's College London, whose pioneering work in cryo-correlative imaging workflows continues to shape the field. Thank you, Roland, for sharing your expertise and insights with the consortium. A big thank you also to all of the Principal Investigators who attended with their Doctoral Candidates and contributed so actively to the discussions throughout the conference. The collaborative spirit across the network was evident throughout the week. Finally, special thanks to Prof. Jeremy Simpson and Prof. Oliver Blacque for coordinating the project and organising such a successful and engaging event. While all instruments at University College Dublin's (UCD) national cryo-Imaging Centre still need a few more months before they are commissioned and operational, this has not stopped SiriusXT and UCD researchers collaborating on EU-funded cryo-correlative imaging projects. We’re delighted to share that SiriusXT has contributed the very first industry “Tech Bite” to the Volume Electron Microscopy (#vEM) Newsletter (March 2026 edition). Our article — “Addressing the Context–Resolution Challenge in Biomedical Imaging” — explores a fundamental issue facing advanced structural imaging today: As resolution improves, imaging volume is often sacrificed. Electron microscopy delivers extraordinary ultrastructural detail, but typically at the cost of context—forcing researchers to choose between seeing the detail and seeing the whole. In this Tech Bite, we outline how cryo-Correlative Light, Electron and X-ray Microscopy (CLEXM) provides a practical path forward: • Fluorescence microscopy → functional insight • Soft X-ray tomography → intact, 3D whole-cell context • Cryo-EM → targeted nanoscale detail By combining these modalities, researchers can move seamlessly from whole-cell architecture to precise regions of interest—without losing biological meaning along the way. Resolution still matters. A sincere thank you to all partners, fellows and seconded staff for the tremendous work over the past months. The preparation, coordination and scientific commitment behind today’s discussions truly reflect the strength of this consortium. Since January 2025, EVEREST has been advancing: 🔬 Standardisation of EV isolation and characterisation (WP1) 🧬 Biomarker discovery in cancer, cardiovascular, respiratory and inflammatory diseases (WP2) 💊 Development of EV-based therapeutic platforms and drug delivery strategies (WP3) 🚀 Commercialisation pathways and technology transfer (WP4) With an ambitious plan of 285 months of staff exchanges across 22 institutions in 11 countries, EVEREST is fostering real intersectoral knowledge transfer between academia, SMEs and clinical environments, fully aligned with the MSCA Staff Exchanges objectives of mobility, skills development and innovation capacity building . CLEXM: Resolving the Context–Resolution Debate in Biomedical Imaging! For decades, biological imaging has pursued ever-higher resolution. From super-resolution fluorescence to cryo-electron tomography, the field has pushed nanometer boundaries with extraordinary success. But along the way, an important question has emerged: - Is resolution alone enough? High resolution reveals exquisite detail — but often within a limited volume. Large-volume imaging provides structural context — but at lower resolution. Researchers are frequently forced to choose between seeing the whole and seeing the detail. This is the context–resolution debate! CLEXM offers a resolution — in both senses of the word! In #CLEXM workflows, context is not a single layer of information. It is built deliberately. First, fluorescence microscopy provides functional context — identifying rare events, protein localization, or dynamic cellular states. Then, soft X-ray tomography delivers non-destructive, whole-sample structural context — imaging intact, cryogenically preserved cells or tissues in three dimensions without sectioning. The full architecture of the sample remains visible, preserving spatial relationships that are often lost in destructive preparation workflows. Together, functional and structural context define regions of interest with precision and confidence. Only then is high-resolution electron microscopy applied — targeted to specific sites within a fully understood biological landscape. Resolution remains essential. But resolution without context can mislead. CLEXM ensures that nanoscale detail is interpreted within the architecture of the whole.
