Will this post end my career? That tought has been in my mind for over a year now. Ever since I was officially diagnosed with ADHD after a long and thorough evaluation. I’m posting now because we need more awareness around ADHD and mental health in general. Perhaps by being open and sharing my story, I can make a small positive difference. Here we go:  The diagnosis didn’t come as a surprise to me (and won’t surprise those who know me). What came as a surprise was realising how much it affected my entire life from the very beginning. When I learned more about ADHD, especially the emotional side, it was both disturbing and comforting. Disturbing because I was forced to confront uncomfortable truths. Comforting because I realized I wasn’t alone, even though I'd felt isolated and not understood as far back as I can remember. My mom used to ask me, “What’s wrong with you Michael?” Not out of curiosity or empathy, but frustration (no blame, she didn’t know better). Shame became baked into my psychology. Along with a sense that I had to hide aspects of myself or face complete rejection. It’s not true that people with ADHD can’t focus. Hyperfocus is one of the main traits. The challenge is lack of executive function; that we don’t control what we focus on. Tasks that don't catch our attention become insurmountable. But when something does catch our attention, we go all the way down the rabbit hole. This goes for emotions as well. Whatever emotion screams loudest gets all the attention. This leads to constant, torturous rumination. Life often feels like you're being dragged by a racehorse, struggling to hold onto the reins. It's exhausting. ADHD is both a strength and a weakness at the same time. That's very important to understand. You have a lightning fast brain - but you can’t modulate it. Warp speed all the time. You’re 100% invested - or checked out. When you experience everything with full intensity, the crash is inevitable. Confidence bordering on arrogance - but also a deep fragility. Any perceived rejection can crush you instantly. A divergent mind that goes where no other mind ventures - but you struggle to get others to understand your points and ideas. Awe-inspiring levels of enthusiasm and energy - but you frequently overhelm others. The good news is you can learn to leverage the strengths and keep the weaknesses in check. But it’s a long journey that starts with awareness and self-awareness. ADHD is an explanation, not an excuse. So, am I worried that this post will end my career? Yes, but if I'm deemed incompetent due to my ADHD, it'd be the definition of irony. My ADHD brain makes me good at my job! In CRO and experimentation, hyper-focus, fast processing and divergent thinking are strengths. Got questions? Write me a DM. If I don’t reply immediately, it's not that I don't care.
