  • One of our co-founders sharing an insightful story! 💫

For 2 years, I couldn't swim through 'het gat.' In the Netherlands, every kid has swimming lessons. To pass your exam, you have to swim through the infamous ‘hole’ underwater. With each level, the hole moves further away, so you have to swim longer underwater. 🩱 All the kids in my group passed level 1 after 6 months and moved up. I stayed.  For two long years.. 🤯 My teachers tried everything. My parents got hopeless, slowly but surely... Then one day, my teacher said: "Next up is Esther, the ballet dancer!" 🩰 I jumped in. Swam through the hole. Just like that... I remember her face being a mix of shock, surprise and relief. --- While preparing for a workshop on speaking behavior, this story came back to me. It showed me how this theatrical instruction of my swimming teacher helped me break a cycle and get through that hole. 𝐈𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐬, 𝐰𝐞 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐜𝐤 𝐢𝐧. How you present yourself is simply learned behavior. By pretending to be 'someone else' for a moment, you change your behavior. This way, you get access to a part of yourself that was always there. I see it in our workshops all the time. Women who are smart, capable, full of ideas, but frozen the moment they have to speak. Taking on a different role through body and voice, even briefly, can be so freeing. In the end: I was the one swimming through that hole. The idea of the ballet dancer just helped me feel confident enough to keep swimming! 🏊♀️ Picture shows a very proud me back in the early 2000s.

  • A little insight in our 1:1 coaching sessions, through co-founder Esther de Bruijn's eyes 💫

We spend an hour on just one thing: the moment before she speaks.. Only 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 of speaking in front of a group made her extremely nervous. These big nerves were in the way of everything else: Connecting to her audience, remembering her words,  being present. So for 1 hour, we kept returning to that moment: the seconds before you speak. We observed,  named what happened internally, breathed,  stayed with the sensations,  tried different ways of arriving. We could have gone straight into actual speaking, but 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠. These first seconds either ground you, or they pull everyone (you ánd your audience) into disconnection or stress mode. After 5 1:1 coaching sessions, I had tears in my eyes as she came on stage. She had a completely different presence, taking the time, allowing herself the space. Confident, expanded, connecting. Ooooo how I love my job.. Witnessing moments like this, realizing how differently she will be perceived from now on every time she speaks! That feels so purposeful for me ❤️ -  👋 Hi, I'm Esther! Co-Founder of Female Speaking Berlin & public speaking coach with a background in professional theatre.  I help people find, own, and use their voice through public speaking workshops, training programs, and coaching.  🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/enW-fBKd  💜 Follow me for more on: public speaking, storytelling, women's empowerment.

In theatre school, we had 3 hours of voice classes per week on the schedule. 🏫 In my first year, we had to perform a monologue in front of the group. Afterwards, the teacher gave feedback on our voice. Some people didn't articulate clearly, some had accents they needed to get rid off, others didn't connect meaning to their words. These classes were nerve wracking, knowing at some point it's your turn to "hear what you're doing wrong" (that's how it felt back then). Once I finished my monologue, the teacher said: “𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭.” I remember the whole class nodding, and I had no idea what they were talking about. 🤔 Too fast...? It took me semesters to understand what she meant. Slowing down was not only technical, it also meant trusting my words, taking up space, leaving meaningful pauses & being in control of the narrative. Today, when I ask women I work with to slow down, I often see the same reaction I probably had back then. Full of discomfort and exposure! 🥴 Because when you slow down, you can't hide behind the speed anymore. You signal to your audience, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘢𝘺 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳. And that can feel vulnerable at first... BUT I promise: it will be empowering! Cause that’s when your message starts to land. 🫶 Picture shows proof how it can feel to get up, take up space and SPEAK! ❤️

  • We’re looking for the other half of the story. So far, the submissions for THE BEAR's March 19th show, "Matriarchs & Muses," have been incredible... but they’ve all been from women. We want a stage that reflects the full spectrum of how women influence our lives. The Prize: 4 handpicked storytellers will receive professional 1-on-1 coaching from Female Speaking Berlin to refine their story and rock the stage at Theatre Pool. The Theme: True, personal stories of the women who shaped us. https://lnkd.in/dBHiTVDx The Who: Open to ALL genders. The Deadline: March 1st, midnight. ✨ International Day of Women and Girls in Science ✨ VISIBILITY SHAPES POSSIBILITY When a young girl sees a woman: leading research, presenting findings confidently, moderating panels, building scientific startups, she doesn’t just see a career. She sees herself. Stories are one of the most powerful ways to challenge perspectives and rewrite outdated narratives. During Berlin Science Week '25, Female Speaking Berlin had the privilege of bringing six outstanding female science talents on stage in collaboration with THE BEAR. Each of them shared the woman behind the science. They courageously share their lived experiences, doubt, breakthrough moments, and vision. Because when ✨ WOMEN in SCIENCE TELL ✨ their ✨ STORIES ✨ publicly, something shifts: ✨ POSSIBILITY BECOMES VISIBLE. ✨ For the next generation who was in the audience, these moments matter. Young people were imagining their own path. Today is not only about celebration, but a reminder to take action! ✨ To event organizers: diversify your speaker lists. ✨ To institutions: elevate women scientists publicly. ✨ To all of us: recommend women experts in rooms they are not yet in. At Female Speaking Berlin, we are working toward a future where women in science are are a welcomed, natural and expected presence. Thank you to our inspiring speakers 🙏 : ✨ Paola Carrillo-Bustamante, Ph.D, ✨ Charlotte Berrezueta Palacios, ✨Maira Jimenez, PMP, M. • From next year on! ❤️🔥

“I would like to order one public speaking workshop, with a spoon of theatre sauce on top.” 🍲 I do what I love. I’m building a business where women and non-binary people can thrive, grow and speak with confidence. This work aligns deeply with my social values and my wish to contribute to a fairer, more inclusive world. ❤️ In my public speaking workshops, I always include elements drawn from my background in professional theatre. For over a decade, this is where I’ve been teaching, practicing, and refining my work. I still do that - and on top of that, I bring these tools into professional and business environments. Over the past 18 months, I’ve noticed that whenever that 'theatre sauce' comes to the table, that’s where people step out of their comfort zones, discover their full range, and have so much FUN. It brings play and joy back into expression. Within a safe space, even hesitant or quieter participants feel ready to explore beyond their comfort zones, experiment, and move past their speaking habits. "𝘚𝘰 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯?" I thought. I reached out to Soho House Berlin to host a theatre improvisation workshop for women* and non-binary professionals. They said YES right away! The workshop was completely booked out and a big success, so without a doubt: from January on, it will be added to our official offerings for companies. Slide through to see which skills you will build through theatre improvisation! Who's ready? ❤️🔥 Drop me a message 💛
