⚠️ Did you know that women live longer than men, yet often spend more years in poorer health conditions?⚠️ That question stayed with us after attending “Starting up in Women’s Health: From Science to Innovation & Market Impact”. An event organized by the Innovation Office University of Bern, University of Bern and the Department of Digital Medicine. What made the discussions particularly powerful was that despite clear biological differences, in physiology, hormonal cycles and disease manifestation, #Women have historically been underrepresented in both preclinical and clinical research. And that gap has real consequences across areas such as #CardiovascularDisease, #Oncology, #MentalHealth, #NeurologicalDisorders, #AutoimmuneDiseases like multiple sclerosis and conditions like #Migraines, #Endometriosis or #Menopause. Today, this lack of representation still continues to impact diagnosis, treatment and outcomes. Berna Özdemir (Insel Gruppe) shared how #CircadianBiology can influence cancer therapies, showing that timing, hormones and biological sex can significantly affect both efficacy and toxicity. A strong reminder that #PrecisionMedicine cannot exist without understanding sex and gender differences in health. Another key takeaway was how #FemTech and #DigitalMedicine are becoming powerful catalysts for change. Speakers such as Anna Luisa Schaffgotsch (Impli) discussed innovations like continuous hormone monitoring technologies opening new doors for more personalized data-driven care, while Fiona Thwaites (FTCS Consulting) spoke about scaling women’s health innovation ecosystems and unlocking the access to investment for female-focused health solutions. The seminar also featured valuable perspectives from: 🔸 Sonia Muliyil (The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology, & Women’s Health) on the future of women’s health research and publishing 🔸 Mariapaola Barbato (Women's Brain Foundation) on brain health, mental health and sex-sensitive medicine 🔸 Nina Portier Reinhart (Meno Swiss) on the growing investment landscape and opportunities within the menopause market One message became impossible to ignore: Women’s health is not a niche topic. It is a massive healthcare, economic and societal issue that affects half of the world’s population. And finally, there seems to be a real shift happening. Healthcare companies, researchers and investors are increasingly recognizing the urgent need for more #InclusiveResearch, better representation of women in clinical studies, including pregnant, breastfeeding and menopausal women and more accessible innovations designed specifically for women’s health needs. Last Tuesday at Stücki Park, something important happened. Together with TWiST Basel, we brought together PhDs, postdocs and industry professionals to openly discuss a question that sits quietly in the minds of so many researchers: 👉 How do we successfully transition from #Academia into #Industry? What made the evening especially valuable was how honest and practical the discussions were. No generic advice. No polished corporate answers. Just real insights from professionals who genuinely understand both worlds. One of the most eye-opening moments came from Guillaume Lhote, who spoke about something that creates anxiety for almost every job seeker today: #ATS systems and #RecruitmentProcesses. A common myth says: “ATS systems automatically reject 75% of CVs.” But the reality is far more nuanced. ATS platforms are not robots deciding your future. They are mainly tools designed to parse, organize and rank applications efficiently based on their relevance to a job description. And when recruiters manage hundreds of applications per role (often 250+ CVs), clarity becomes critical. 📌 Some practical takeaways Guillaume shared: • Tailor your CV to the specific role • Use relevant keywords naturally and strategically • Make your experience easy to scan and understand • Avoid overly complex formatting • Focus on relevance, not just quantity of information Another powerful conversation came from Lhackdon Beck, PCC ICF around #Networking and how misunderstood it often is. Networking is not asking for a job. It’s building trust over time. One of the strongest takeaways from the session was that meaningful professional relationships are rarely transactional. The strongest connections are built through #Consistency, #Authenticity and #Reciprocity. • Invest in long-term relationships, not one-time interactions • Support others before expecting something in return • Stay visible in professional communities and events • Your LinkedIn presence is your digital handshake • Internal networking matters too, opportunities often come from cross-functional relationships Another moment that resonated deeply with the audience came from Estefanía Córdova, who shared an important reflection on #CareerGrowth: Growth is not always vertical, sometimes it means changing direction, sometimes it means building adjacent skills or the courage to ask difficult questions. One question she encouraged everyone to reflect on: 👉 “Where would I like to be in 5 years?” Because intentional careers are rarely built by accident.
