[Event Recap] Ahmed Osman at the Smart Built Environment Forum & Awards in Abu Dhabi today. Ahmed represented U+A and joined Panel 1: Real Estate — Building Communities with a Cultural Soul, where the discussion focused on the future of development in Abu Dhabi. Moderated by Tarek Al Assil the panel brought together Dana Awad, FARIS AL KHATTAB, Yazan Al Khalidi, Marcos Rosello, and explored how cultural identity can be shaped through real estate, what people value beyond location and amenities, why some developments retain identity while others become generic, and how technology can support belonging rather than standardize experience. For U+A, the discussion reflected a broader belief that development in Abu Dhabi is moving beyond delivery alone, toward places with depth, continuity, and a stronger sense of belonging. [Project Feature] Al Wasl Villas is a residential development in Dubai’s Al Wasl district, designed by U+A with architectural scope and completed in 2024. Positioned within an area undergoing significant transformation, as highlighted by Khaleej Times, the project responds to its evolving urban context through a design that prioritizes spatial clarity, privacy, and the quality of everyday living. The villas are structured around the careful overlap of spaces, with split levels guiding transitions between public and private zones while maintaining visual connections across floors. Central volumes frame views and natural light, creating a sense of continuity as residents move through the home. A semi-basement level accommodates parking and back-of-house functions, allowing the ground floor to remain dedicated to family living, social spaces, and direct connections to landscaped gardens and terraces. Landscape plays a key role in shaping a calm internal environment, acting as a buffer from surrounding urban activity while reinforcing the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces. The addition of a community facility supports the residential character of the development, complementing the private villas with a shared amenity that enhances daily life within this emerging neighborhood. Built for Today, Designed for Tomorrow   Sustainability in architecture today is no longer an added value; it is a fundamental responsibility. As the built environment continues to shape how we live and consume resources, integrating environmental considerations into design has become essential to delivering long-term value, efficiency, and resilience.   Today, sustainable design goes beyond energy efficiency. It encompasses a holistic approach that considers building orientation, passive design strategies, material selection, and resource optimization. It is also about creating spaces that enhance user well-being, reduce operational costs, and remain adaptable over time. By addressing these factors early in the design process, architects can significantly improve a building’s environmental performance while maintaining aesthetic and functional quality.   Through my experience contributing to a sustainability-focused project in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, with Taraf Developers, I gained practical insight into how these principles are applied in real-world scenarios. This experience highlighted the importance of early-stage decision-making and interdisciplinary collaboration in achieving meaningful sustainability outcomes.   This continues to shape my approach to architecture, aiming to deliver solutions that are both efficient and responsible.   “𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙚, 𝙨𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖 𝙛𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙖 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙚𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙜𝙪𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙨 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣.” - Mohammad Fateh , PMP®, Senior Architect at U+A   U+A, a member of 10N Collective, created by Egis   #Architecture #Sustainabledesign #UrbanDevelopment #AbuDhabi #UplusA
