Did you know? The Tire and Rubber Association of Canada recommends winter tires for temperatures below 7°C because their rubber compounds are specifically engineered for colder conditions. When spring temperatures rise, switching customers back to all-season or summer tires helps improve tread life, efficiency, and handling. A simple educational message can become a powerful spring sales tool.

Not all value-tier products are created equal. The growing gap between engineered, tested products and undifferentiated imports matters—especially for consumers making long-term decisions and for dealers standing behind what they sell. // Tous les produits de gamme économique ne se valent pas. L’écart grandissant entre les produits conçus et testés et les importations non différenciées est important — autant pour les consommateurs qui font des choix à long terme que pour les détaillants qui les recommandent.
Typically, “Trading Down” is not something that is interpreted as a positive outcome for a great many situations, however we are seeing a real and nuanced shift in consumer trends. Within the world of replacement tires, the product trade down is most visible in high-volume sizes and in relation to older vehicle fitments, but wider spread than one may initially expect. The average age of vehicles on the road in Canada is increasing every year, and sits at more than 12 years old today, a record high. Higher replacement costs, elevated interest rates, and improved vehicle quality all have a role to play. This directly impacts the mindset of the owners: People are aligning their tire investment with the expected remaining life of the vehicle. A “clever-trade-down” is not about sacrifice on product, it is about right sizing the decision… If a customer is not keeping the vehicle, a premium product meant to outlast the asset no longer makes (dollars and) sense! We have strategically positioned our portfolio to have strong positioning for the “clever-trade-down” consumer: Our brands are NOT the cheapest option Our Brands ARE warrantied, insured, and have a long history in the market Our brands deliver peace of mind AND cost savings Because: not all value brands are created equal. Access to the Canadian market for manufacturers all over the world has created an environment where there exists a considerable gap between properly engineered, tested and certified tires, and those that are simply imported no questions asked. The net result of these trade downs will be lasting, many will realize that a well chosen value tier product can fully meet their needs. It changes the math from a race to the bottom, to a redefinition of value.

Most don’t connect oil prices to tire pricing—but the link is direct. As oil rises, input costs increase, and pricing adjustments follow. Historically, value segments react first. For consumers and businesses alike, now is the time to buy.
Oil prices are going up… so tire prices are next. Most people don’t connect the two, but they should. Outside of raw costs on shipping and transportation rising to get the tire to market, a tire isn’t just natural rubber. A big part of it, synthetic rubber, comes directly from oil. Here’s how it works: When oil prices go up, the cost of key materials like butadiene goes up. ...That makes synthetic rubber more expensive. ...Which increases tire production costs. ...And eventually… prices follow. What most people don’t realize is this: Value brands like Minerva and Ovation are usually the first to be impacted. Why? Because they operate on tighter margins and react faster to raw material increases. So in the real world, waiting doesn’t just risk worn tires—it can mean paying more for the same product. Bottom line: Oil doesn’t just fuel your car, it drives the cost of what your car rides on. If Minerva or Ovation are on your radar, as a consumer or as a business, buying earlier might be smarter than later.
