At OCAS NV (ArcelorMittal Global R&D Gent), we work extensively on advancing the understanding of electrical steels, where complex metallurgy meets industrial application. As highlighted by our Senior Research Engineer Nikolas Mavrikakis, the pilot cold rolling mill at OCAS NV is a valuable tool to bridge laboratory work and industrial conditions for these challenging materials. It allows us to reproduce relevant processing conditions, adjust key parameters, and study the metallurgical mechanisms that influence electrical steel behaviour. This week, #Ghent is the location of several International Institute of Welding commission meetings. These IIW commissions bring together researchers and industry participants in specific fields, working jointly towards the development of highly appreciated documents that assist and support the #industry (such as ISO Standards, IIW Best Practices and IIW Position Statements). Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting FIT - Flanders Investment & Trade at OCAS NV. Offshore wind structures are growing: larger, heavier, and more complex with every new generation. As turbines scale up, projects move into deeper waters, and structures must endure millions of load cycles over decades, one challenge is becoming increasingly critical: #fatigue in welded joints. That’s exactly where large-scale fatigue testing becomes essential. #Fatigue cracks don’t appear overnight - they evolve.   In large welded steel structures, cyclic loading leads to local damage accumulation at fatigue sensitive details such as weld toes, attachments, and repairs.   The loading sources may differ depending on the structure: 🌉 traffic loading in bridges 💨 wind excitation in towers 🌊 wave loading in offshore structures 🏗️ operational cycles in industrial installations   But the governing mechanism remains the same: cyclic stresses driving progressive fatigue damage.   Managing this process is challenging because fatigue develops continuously during operation, while most structural assessments rely on periodic inspections. These #inspections remain essential, but they provide only snapshots of the structural condition.   #CRATUS adds continuity to fatigue management.   CRATUS is OCAS NV’s crack monitoring service for steel structures. #Sensors are installed near identified fatigue hotspots to detect and track #crack #initiation and #growth in real time.
