Clerkenwell Design Week had plenty to look at. The better question was: what made people stay? By mid-week, the pace across EC1 had shifted. The strongest moments were not always the biggest installations or the busiest showrooms, but the spaces that made people slow down, look closer, and linger a little longer. Workplace design softened. Materials became more atmospheric. Colour, acoustics, craft, and reuse moved beyond surface treatment into something more human. Cadence begins at the seam. For LZF Lamps, Ramón Esteve Cambra’s Black Notes turns the place where wood veneer closes into the point where light begins. What is usually hidden becomes the glow. Built from dark-stained veneer cylinders arranged in a graduated rhythm, the pendant draws a quiet line between music and architecture. Its warm atmospheric light filters through the grain, while the central bar brings directional illumination to the surface below. It is lighting as rhythm, structure, and spatial composition. Chrome and Grain studies the quiet friction between polished and grounded. Smoked wood, reflective chrome, stone textures and muted neutrals come together in a moodboard that feels structured but not severe. Sculptural forms soften the sharper edges, while tactile finishes bring warmth into the palette. The result is a residential mood with a quieter kind of drama, where chrome does not compete with earthier materials. It sharpens them. In a hotel this detailed, even the controls have to keep their composure. Set within the upper floors of Vattanac Capital Tower, Rosewood Phnom Penh layers Cambodian references with dark timber, brass, travertine, leather, mosaic finishes, and shaded calm. Nothing here can feel accidental & that includes the technology. JUNG’s KNX controls, F 50 push-buttons, and LS 990 range in antique brass are worked into the interiors with the same restraint as the rest of the hotel. Five years from now, the Architecture & Interior Design industry will move beyond static spaces into intelligent, adaptive environments shaped by data, sustainability, and digital interaction. AI-driven design workflows, real-time material intelligence, and hyper-personalised spatial experiences will become standard, while clients increasingly expect spaces to perform as ecosystems that optimise wellbeing, energy use, flexibility, and brand identity simultaneously. The industry will also see a major shift from purely aesthetic storytelling to measurable impact, where circular materials, carbon transparency, smart building integration, and digitally discoverable products influence both specification and commercial value. As physical and digital worlds continue to merge, designers will operate less like decorators of space and more like orchestrators of connected experiences across hospitality, workplace, retail, residential, and virtual environments.

Local identity does not need to look like a postcard. For this Munich workplace, Kinzo looks past the obvious Bavarian clichés and builds the office around softer cues: the Isar, summer greens, blue-white gradients, textured surfaces, and a more fluid way of working. Across three floors, the office moves away from a desk-first model. Cafés, team neighbourhoods, workshops, training areas, and informal zones create a workplace that feels more fluid, more social, and more useful for the way teams actually move through the day. Some legacies don’t fade. They change colour. At Salone del Mobile.Milano 2026, Kvadrat’s In Rainbows turned Frans Dijkmeijer’s archive into a living field of textile, light and movement. At the centre: Twisted Flower, a new woollen upholstery textile revived from a handwoven sample and brought into bloom through Giulio Ridolfo ’s botanical palette. One very good week for specification. A sliding door that blocks 37 decibels of noise without sacrificing the glass. A pouf that changes colour by fabric code, not catalogue. A chair whose upholstery slips on and off like a glove and is designed to be replaced, not thrown away. An armchair by architect Leonardo Rossano that landed at Milan Design Week 2025 and earned its place. A Japanese botanical mural that shifts with the light it sits in. A quartz surface that is 94% natural mineral and does not need sealing, ever. None of these are obvious choices. All of them are the right ones.
