We made it on the cover! Ok, actually our paper did ;) This issue of Advanced Science selected our work, Quantitative Stain Mapping in X-Ray Virtual Histology, for the cover. The artwork shown below features an X-ray beam hitting an organ, with a colorful histology image bouncing off onto a glass plate, like the cellular detail of the tissue is just reflecting off the sample. A bit of background: when doctors want to examine tissue in detail (for example, to diagnose a disease), they usually cut it into very thin slices, stain it with colorful dyes that highlight things like cell nuclei, and look at it under a microscope. It's the gold standard, but it only shows you the few slices that were physically cut, so everything in between is lost. Our paper shows how to take 3D X-ray scans of stained tissue and turn them into the same kind of colorful, microscope-style images using an algorithm. We also get quantitative 3D maps of exactly where and how much stain is inside the tissue, at micrometer resolution. That means you can explore the entire sample in 3D, with the familiar contrast pathologists and researchers already know how to read. Could bone hold early clues to Alzheimer's disease — before the brain shows any signs? A study just published in #AdvancedScience Wiley In Research Advanced Portfolio by Schurman, Kaur et al. Buck Institute for Research on Aging University of California, San Francisco makes a compelling case that it might, at least in women. The team found that APOE4 — the strongest known genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's — causes significant bone fragility in female mice without any detectable change in bone structure or density. The damage is invisible to standard clinical measurements, yet the bones of APOE4 females were nearly twice as fragile as controls. The mechanism traces back to osteocytes, the long-lived dendritic cells that govern bone quality, which showed suppressed function and a disorganised cellular network in APOE4 females. Strikingly, the molecular disruption in bone was broader than what was observed in the hippocampus of the same animals at the same age — a time when cognitive symptoms are still mild. This reframes how we think about the bone–brain connection in women. I am happy to share our recent paper on “Unveiling Catalytic Design Principles for C2 Product Formation in CO2 Electroreduction via Machine Learning” (https://lnkd.in/dKbpf_Va) published in Advanced Sustainable Systems (IF: 6.1)Advanced Portfolio. In this work, we developed two interpretable ML models trained over molecular scale and lab scale data to predict the factors that govern the catalytic activity towards the C2 products formation from the electroreduction of CO2. Delighted to share a new publication from my group, now out in Advanced Science (Advanced Portfolio Wiley): “Organ-Specific and Conserved Regulatory Logic Orchestrates Gene Expression in the Embryonic Mesothelium.” This study was driven by exceptional work from PhD student Quang Dang and co‑led with Andia Redpath. A rewarding collaboration between King's Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine | King's College London and the Institute of Developmental and Regenerative Medicine - University of Oxford | University of Oxford, supported by funding from the British Heart Foundation. Using integrated multi‑omic profiling across the heart, lung and pancreas, we map the gene‑regulatory landscape of the coelomic mesothelium and uncover: - a cardiac‑restricted regulatory programme in which TBX20 activates epicardial enhancers; - a conserved mesothelial identity network centred on MAF, acting through evolutionarily conserved cis‑regulatory elements and inversely associated with EMT. These findings define both organ‑specific and core conserved regulatory logic governing mesothelial development and epicardial EMT, providing a foundational blueprint for future work. 🎉 We are thrilled to share our work on the lymphoid-tissue on-chip model. “Lymphoid-Tissue-on-Chip Recapitulates Human Antibody Responses In Vitro” is now published in Advanced Science/ Advanced Portfolio 👉https://lnkd.in/dspV8Ec7   In our work, we introduce a centrifugal microfluidics-based organ-on-chip platform that recreates high-density, organotypic lymphoid tissue in-vitro. The platform enables long-term culture and supports robust, antigen-specific antibody responses to influenza vaccines for up to 4 weeks. We demonstrate that both direct antigen exposure and recruitment of peripheral antigen-presenting cells can drive immune responses. This novel lymphoid-tissue-on-chip offers a human-relevant alternative to traditional models, enabling evaluation of antigen delivery effects on adaptive immunity and long-term study of cellular interactions. Inspired by the iris species, we implemented a Bayesian classifier directly in hardware using Gaussian and sigmoid transistors. Yes, this is about distinguishing iris flowers 🌸 not the Korean proposal submission system (for once 😄).
