Transportation Maintenance Tech I:

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Transportation Maintenance Tech II:

Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material

and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on

equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities.

Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties: The essential duties for the Transportation Maintenance Tech I include:

  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional duties for Transportation Maintenance Tech II include:

  • Using basic mathematical fundamentals.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, material, and products.
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Education:

Transportation Maintenance Tech I/II: No education required.

Experience for Transportation Maintenance Tech (TMT):

  • TMT I = No experience required
  • TMT II = 1 year experience*
  • Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications .

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid US driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.

  • Using basic mathematical fundamentals.
  • Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports.
  • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems.
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment.
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively.

Additional competencies for Transportation Maintenance Tech II include:

Considerable knowledge of:

  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures.

  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
  • Using basic mathematical fundamentals.
  • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems.
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment.
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions for Transportation Maintenance Tech I/II:

  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes.
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
  • Subject to noise.
  • Subject to vibration.
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals.
  • Required to wear protective gear, including, respirator, hard hat, steal toed boots, and other equipment or devices.
  • Works in narrow aisles or passageways.
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10lbs at at time and occasionally carry files/small tools.
  • Light work: Life up to 20lbs at a time and frequently life or carry objects up to 10lbs.
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s).
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time.
  • Walking-moving on foot accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another.
  • Pushing-using upper extremities to press against object with force to move in a direction.
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position.
  • Fingering-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand.
  • Grasping-applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm.

Salary Plan:

Transportation Maintenance Technician I - A16 - $40,918.00 - $61,130.00

Transportation Maintenance Technician II - A17 - $42,976.00 - $64,469.00
