BBSI is partnering with a respected mechanical design-build firm to hire a Senior Mechanical Engineer who wants more than just producing drawings.
This is a hands-on, high-impact position where you will lead HVAC system design, influence project outcomes, and collaborate closely with project managers and field teams while mentoring junior engineers.
Position Overview
The Senior Mechanical Engineer serves as a technical lead designer responsible for delivering code-compliant, buildable, and well-coordinated mechanical designs from concept through construction. This role has full ownership of project deliverables and provides technical leadership without direct personnel management responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Design Leadership
- Lead HVAC system design from basis of design through permit and issued-for-construction documents
- Establish system selection, equipment sizing, and control strategies
- Design both air-side systems (VAV, DOAS, exhaust, pressurization, heat recovery) and water-side systems (hydronic plants, pumping, valves, heat rejection)
- Ensure compliance with California codes, energy standards, and local AHJ requirements
- QA/QC and Engineering Excellence
- Oversee quality control of load calculations, duct and pipe sizing, equipment schedules, and design details
- Perform thorough design reviews to ensure accuracy, coordination, and field constructability
- Coordination and Field Integration
- Partner with Project Managers to present systems and solutions to clients and stakeholders
- Participate in site walks and existing condition assessments
- Provide construction-phase support including submittal reviews, RFIs, and design clarifications
- Mentorship and Team Support
- Guide and mentor junior engineers on design fundamentals, codes, and best practices
- Contribute to improving engineering standards, processes, and overall team performance
Minimum Qualifications
- 7–10+ years of experience in commercial HVAC design
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not required
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, equipment, and construction practices
- Proficiency in Carrier HAP, Trace 700, EnergyPro, or similar tools
- Proficiency in AutoCAD; Revit experience preferred
- Strong knowledge of California building codes and energy requirements
