The Prep Cook is responsible for preparing ingredients and food items according to Iron Hill recipes and production standards. This role supports the kitchen team by ensuring all ingredients are properly prepared, organized, and ready for service.
Prep Cooks help maintain a clean, organized, and efficient kitchen while supporting both prep and line operations as needed.

Essential Responsibilities
Food Preparation
Prepare ingredients according to Iron Hill recipes, procedures, and quality standards
Perform prep tasks such as washing, chopping, slicing, portioning, and mixing ingredients
Assist in preparing items such as sauces, desserts, and other menu components
Follow prep sheets and production lists to ensure proper quantities are prepared
Label and date all prepared items according to food safety and storage standards
Inventory & Organization
Properly store and rotate ingredients using FIFO (first-in, first-out) procedures
Assist with receiving and properly putting away food deliveries
Maintain organized storage areas including walk-ins, freezers, and dry storage
Monitor product quality and freshness during preparation
Station Maintenance & Cleaning
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized prep area throughout the shift
Clean and sanitize prep surfaces, equipment, and tools
Break down and clean the prep station at the end of each shift
Follow all sanitation and food safety procedures
Team Support
Assist line cooks with prep needs during busy service periods
Support kitchen operations by helping with basic cooking or finishing tasks when needed
Occasionally assist with dishwashing or other kitchen support tasks
Work collaboratively with the kitchen team to maintain an efficient workflow
Physical Requirements
The physical demands listed below are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of this position.
Ability to stand for extended periods of time (6+ hours per shift)
Ability to lift and carry items up to 30–50 pounds, including food products and kitchen equipment
Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, and lifting during food preparation
Ability to push and pull carts, racks, and kitchen equipment
Ability to work in fast-paced kitchen environments

Qualifications
1 year of kitchen or food preparation experience preferred
Basic understanding of food preparation techniques and kitchen operations
Ability to follow recipes and prep lists accurately
Basic knife skills and knowledge of common prep terminology such as dice, julienne, and chiffonade
Understanding of food safety, sanitation, and kitchen safety procedures
Ability to obtain and maintain required food handler certification
Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and efficient workstation
Strong attention to detail and consistency when preparing ingredients
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced kitchen environment
Ability to support prep, line, and dish operations when needed
Strong teamwork and communication skills
Commitment to maintaining a positive and respectful kitchen culture
Communication & Language Skills
Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions related to recipes and preparation procedures
Ability to communicate clearly with kitchen staff and management
