Your Role And Responsibilities
IBM is seeking an experienced environmental professional with strong technical skills in chemical, environmental engineering and treatment systems including groundwater, soil vapor intrusion, indoor air quality, hazardous waste, and wastewater to join the Global Real Estate team based in Poughkeepsie, NY. This role will directly support compliance with IBM corporate environmental programs as well as local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
In this role, you will work closely with site operations, facility engineering, design and construction, and external regulators to develop work plans for regulatory compliance of critical site programs and projects that intersect with groundwater, soil, vapor, waste and industrial wastewater management. This will include developing alternative analysis and compliance approach strategies that best support business needs. You will lead environmental reporting and inspections across multiple New York State DEC divisions including water, solid and hazardous waste and environmental remediation as well as engage with NYDEC and federal environmental regulators. You will interface with these agencies to support facilities operations and evaluate emerging regulatory requirements.

Primary Responsibilities
- Serves as single point of contact for environmental programs in IBM Real Estate portfolio
- Ensure compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations, permits, and internal IBM environmental policies
- Support all aspects of permitting and reporting including interfacing with regulatory agencies (NYSDEC, EPA, DOH, and US Army Corps of Engineers) during inspections
- Manage all internal and external audits of relevant environmental programs
- Provide oversight and expertise on all aspects of solid and hazardous waste management, spill response and prevention, groundwater, soil vapor intrusion and mitigation programs at the Poughkeepsie facility and as required across the IBM Real Estate Portfolio
- Meet stakeholder needs while maintaining detailed systems processes and environmental records
- Proactively identify operational challenges and collaborate and communicate effectively with internal business teams to develop solutions.
Master's Degree
Required Technical And Professional Expertise
- Degree in chemical, mechanical or environmental engineering
- Academic training or experience across environmental media (waste, water, groundwater, soil vapor intrusion, and wastewater) with experience in investigation, monitoring, and treatment
- Strong strategic thinking, data analysis, and project management skills; able to manage multiple priorities and provide sound recommendations to senior leadership
- Excellent written and oral communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work across diverse internal and external teams
- Highly collaborative, adaptable, and willing to support broader sustainability initiatives aligned with IBM’s mission to innovate using advanced technologies
- Knowledge of key federal and New York state environmental laws and programs, including but not limited to RCRA, Pollution Prevention, Clean Water Act
- Experience with Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001)
- Experience in environmental incident and chemical management
- RCRA, DOT, and IATA/ICAO training certifications
