Summary

American Progress is seeking a Director of Broadcast Communications. The Director will serve as a senior member of the Communications department and will be responsible for overseeing all interactions and partnerships with broadcast media (TV, digital streaming, radio, and podcasts). The Director will also play a key role in preparing CAP experts for media appearances by leading media trainings and preparing briefing materials. The Director of Broadcast Communications will also create and disseminate talking points to partners and distribute memos and briefings to hosts, producers, broadcast reporters, and bookers. This position will supervise up to two staff members.


The role requires a deep understanding of the broadcast media environment, an assertive mindset, and an ability to work in a fast-paced environment.


Responsibilities:

  • Oversee American Progress’ TV, digital streaming, radio, and podcast program.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with bookers, producers, and reporters.
  • Actively pitch American Progress staff and analyses for broadcast appearances, including handling the necessary logistics and managing preparation and research.
  • Prepare and brief executive leadership for TV interviews.
  • Create and disseminate materials such as memos and talking points.
  • Run individual and group media trainings for staff at all levels of the organization.
  • Generate press interest in American Progress events and act as the liaison to broadcast media.
  • Field incoming press inquiries and determine the strategic value of engagement.
  • Oversee the use of American Progress’ in-house TV and radio studios—both for staff and external vendors—and implement strategies to increase the studios’ utility.


Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • A minimum of seven to nine years of experience in media and/or communications; background in broadcast media is strongly preferred.
  • Experience preparing a principal for media appearances, or experience in media training, is a plus.
  • Existing relationships with hosts, broadcast reporters, producers, and bookers.
  • Strong interest in media and public policy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well on a team.
  • Ability to multitask and to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
