Position summary

The Regional Director (RD) is the chief executive of San Francisco Region (SFR) of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) a West Coast non-profit amateur road racing organization that promotes safe, competitive motorsport for non-professional drivers. The RD provides strategic leadership, manages day-to-day operations, and ensures events are safe, financially sound, and aligned with SFR’s mission.

Key responsibilities

  • At the direction of the Board of Directors, develop and execute strategic planning, annual goal setting, and program development for the SFR race series, and improved member service.
  • Oversee marketing and sales activity which results in bringing in new competitors and volunteers.
  • Oversee race operations, including scheduling events, securing tracks, insurance, and ensuring compliance with relevant sanctioning body rules and safety standards. Includes buying services from tracks that either SFR does not have or needs additional resources.
  • Manage staff and coordinate with volunteers including Specialty Chiefs, Stewards, Timing/Scoring, Registration, Tech Inspection and others. Set clear expectations and foster an inclusive culture.
  • Active participation along with the Board of Directors with the relationship SFR has with the sanctioning body SCCA.

Racing operations and safety

  • Create race schedules, event formats, and supplemental regulations; coordinate with Board, Race Directors and Chief Stewards to ensure smooth event execution.
  • Build and maintain relationships with track owners, promoters, sanctioning bodies, and emergency services to support safe, well-run events.
  • Work with the auto-X Chapters to ensure they are getting the support they need to grow their programs. Educate Chapter leadership in SCCA requirements regarding financial and event reporting.

Finance, fundraising, and sponsorship

  • Develop and manage the annual budget, oversee cash flow, and ensure accurate financial reporting to the Board.
  • Set event pricing in consultation with the Board, balancing affordability with financial sustainability.
  • Lead sponsorship and partnership development, including negotiating agreements with businesses, and other partners, and ensuring sponsor benefits are delivered.

Membership, marketing, and community

  • Coordinate membership recruitment, retention, and communication efforts, ensuring members understand benefits, rules, and opportunities to participate.
  • Direct marketing and communications for events and programs (website, email, social media, media outreach), promoting a positive image of amateur road racing.
  • Represent the organization at events, industry meetings, and community functions, serving as a primary spokesperson and ambassador for the club and the sport.
  • Identify and evaluate potential new types of event formats, programs, and other activities that broaden the exposure of SFR to potential new members and further engage existing members.

Governance and board relations

  • Report to and collaborate with the Board of Directors, providing timely information, recommendations, and performance updates.
  • Implement Board policies and decisions, support Board committees, and help orient new Board members.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal, insurance, and regulatory requirements for a nonprofit and for motorsport events.

Qualifications

  • Helpful but not rquried: leadership experience in motorsports business operations, large-scale event management, or a related field, ideally with knowledge of amateur road racing.
  • Experience managing budgets, contracts, and partnerships, and working effectively with volunteers and diverse stakeholders.
