Delighted to share three recent research papers, each examining how people engage with emerging technologies in homes and organisations, and highlighting new perspectives on the human–technology relationship: 1. Anonymous Platforms for Open Security Dialogue in Organisations (ACM CHI 2025): https://lnkd.in/gMDsH3RF To be presented tomorrow, this paper explores the use of anonymous online discussion platforms to foster a people-centred security culture within a large UK educational institution. We found that anonymity encouraged more open sharing and a deeper understanding of security policies, but also presented challenges for addressing specific problems and following up on incidents. Our study discusses how organisations can leverage such platforms to build trust, transparency, and a participatory security culture. 2. Motivations and Barriers for Older Adults Adopting Smart Devices (Journal of Risk Research): https://lnkd.in/gs-nwEVn Published today, this paper investigates why older adults, despite their reputation for being energy conscious, are hesitant to adopt energy-focused smart devices. Through workshops held in a simulated smart home, we discovered that previous negative experiences (particularly with smart meters) and psychological factors significantly affect their willingness to adopt. The label “smart” itself can be off-putting, and receiving such devices as gifts often leads to reluctant replacement rather than genuine enthusiasm. Our research also draws attention to overlooked security issues and subtle psychological harms shaping adoption decisions. 3. Exploring the Human Dimension of Digital Home Ecosystems (Frontiers in Psychology): https://lnkd.in/gT3KVt4p Although there is a growing body of literature on smart home technology, our latest study focuses on the people who live with these technologies. By working with nine diverse households, we examined how residents interact with digital devices, adopt distinct roles, set boundaries, and manage shared use. Our findings introduce new dimensions for understanding how households differ and provide a basis for designing future smart home technologies that are more inclusive of household and relationship diversity.

It seems very under-acknowledged that the current condition, of the educated global consumer-middle class, is the pervasive sense that everything - technology, business, and the governments that are supposed to guard people from the harms of technology and business - is a scam vector if not itself a scam. So-called customer-centred financial institutions and telcos do not seem to incorporate into their profit forecasts that we are at the point where a majority of their customers no longer answer a phone call, or even a text or email. We are a society that has made itself dependent on systems that no-one actually trusts. Every interaction with a business through a technology platform is gambling at this point. You would imagine that the entire strategy of every financial institution and telco right now would be 'relentlessly' focused on building new trustworthy ways of interacting with, and taking care of, their customers. Instead, customer service is being replaced by AI-first digital platforms. AI is of course structurally a scam: it extrudes content (from stolen data) that only ever looks like what was asked for.
