  • Belonging is not just a word at VBCPS. It is something students are actively working to build every day. More than 200 students from the TIDE Coalition gathered for their End of Year Exhibition, marking the close of year three for the program. Students shared what they had been working on all year, learned about how to extend belonging to the adults in their schools and recognized the opportunity champions who helped make them feel welcome. One student said it best: once she joined TIDE, she felt like she could use her own experiences to be someone else's hope. #WeAreVBSchools

  • Kempsville High School students just pitched their way to thousands of dollars in funding, and the ideas they brought to the stage were anything but ordinary. At the Entrepreneurship and Business Academy's annual Pitch Night, student teams presented original business concepts to a panel of local industry leaders in true Shark Tank fashion. Every team on stage walked away with funding or conditional funding to keep their ventures moving forward. The biggest winner of the night was Turf Warrior, a protective spray that reduces turf burn for athletes, which earned $15,000, the most ever awarded to a single team in the event's history. • What if teachers and students learned side by side in the same lesson? At Windsor Oaks Elementary, that is exactly what is happening. Math specialist Madeline Isacoff and her colleagues are bringing students into teacher collaboration sessions, giving educators real-time insight into student thinking while empowering students to help shape their own instruction. The results speak for themselves. Teachers are catching misconceptions as they happen, new teachers are gaining perspective they cannot get any other way, and students are more engaged than ever.
