About us

United Way of Greater Houston creates opportunities for every person in our community to thrive. At the heart of our work is ensuring the safety net by providing life-saving services to meet our neighbors’ most basic needs, like food and shelter. We are here to support families and individuals when they are going through crises, like job loss, domestic violence and natural disasters. And, we create a pathway to self-sufficiency and success for our neighbors and our community. We provide the tools, resources and education for families to achieve financial stability and independence, for children to succeed in school and in life and for veterans to rebuild their lives after returning from service. Every day of the year, 24-hours a day, we are the voice of help and hope for those who call our 2-1-1 Texas/United Way HELPLINE. And, we bring stakeholders and our community together to address the most pressing needs in our area, improving the quality of life for everyone in our region. We do it all strategically, transparently and with a focus on results. Join us. www.unitedwayhouston.org

  • Move over, International Tea Day. Houston has a better reason to celebrate May 21. At last night’s AMA Houston Crystal Awards Gala, the City of Houston made it official: May 21 is now Henry Adaso Day! Our very own AVP of Marketing and Communications received a proclamation from City of Houston Chief Communications Officer Mary Benton on behalf of Mayor John Whitmire, recognizing his tireless leadership as board president of AMA Houston, his invaluable contributions to our United Way, and his decades of work helping brands while mentoring the next generation of marketers. Congratulations, Henry, on this incredible and well-deserved honor.

  • No family should have to wonder where their next meal will come from. 💙 For many households across Greater Houston, rising costs are making it harder to keep food on the table and stay financially stable. Through 211, neighbors can connect to local resources for immediate needs like food, housing and utilities. When everything feels due at once, having a place to turn can make all the difference. If you or someone you know needs support, call 211 to get connected to available resources.

Grateful to have attended today’s Leaders Unscripted hosted by United Way of Greater Houston and presented by CenterPoint Energy. Hearing from leaders like Steve Kean of the Greater Houston Partnership and Sonja Gee, MAM Houston - Memorial Assistance Ministries was a powerful reminder that leadership today requires more than expertise — it requires humility, collaboration, and intentionality. A few insights that stayed with me: * We’re making exponentially more decisions than leaders did just two decades ago. * Great leadership is not about you — it’s about the team. * Happiness is fleeting, but purpose and impact endure. * Humble confidence matters. Leaders must see the bigger picture while remaining grounded. * Strategic leaders focus on how meaningful work actually gets done. * Essentialism matters: taking a step back to identify where we can create the greatest impact with the resources that already exist. * Collaboration is not free — it costs time, trust, and resources — but it’s worth the investment. As someone working in the nonprofit space, I continue to believe the strongest leaders are those who bring people together, lead with service, and stay focused on mission over ego. Thank you to Amanda McMillian for leading such an authentic conversation and to all the panelists for sharing candid leadership lessons that apply across sectors. #Leadership #NonprofitLeadership #Collaboration #WomenWhoLead #HoustonNonprofits #CommunityImpact #UnitedWay #CenterPointEnergy #StrategicLeadership #PurposeDrivenLeadership

  • For many families across Greater Houston, stability can be disrupted by one unexpected expense. A higher utility bill, a missed paycheck, a medical cost or a car repair can quickly make it harder to keep up with food, housing, child care and other basic needs. Through 211, United Way of Greater Houston helps connect neighbors to local resources that can support immediate needs and create a starting point for stability. For those ready to take the next step, the Integrated Client Journey offers tools, coaching and support to help build long-term financial stability. Whether you need help today or are ready to plan for what’s next, United Way can help you find a starting point. To take that first step, call 211 or visit smallwinsbigmoves.org.
