For people living with chronic illness, food isn’t just nourishment, it’s medicine. We’re grateful to the Community Foundation of Broward for a $150,000 grant supporting The Poverello Center’s Food is Medicine Support for Collaborative Initiatives in Broward County. This funding helps expand our Food as Medicine program, providing medically tailored groceries to residents living with chronic illnesses such as HIV, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease — helping ensure they have the nutrition needed to manage their health and improve quality of life. This grant was made possible through funds established at the Community Foundation of Broward, including the Muriel B. Biskup Unrestricted Fund, Marlene Holder Fund for Broward, Footsteps in the Sand, Drial Foundation Fund, Lucille Harris Mann Fund, and the Gilbert Corwin Fund. We’re grateful for partners who recognize that food truly is medicine and are investing in healthier communities across Broward County. #FoodIsMedicine #BrowardCounty #CommunityHealth #PoverelloCenter

A few days ago, we announced that Poverello Center received a $400,000 grant from the Gilead Foundation. For organizations like Poverello, grants like this are not just about dollars, they are about capacity. Capacity to reach people earlier. Capacity to remove barriers to care. Capacity to meet people where they are before small problems become bigger ones. This investment allows us to expand community-led HIV prevention, increase testing, improve access to long-acting prevention and treatment options, and strengthen nutrition support for people living with chronic illness across South Florida. But just as importantly, it allows us to continue addressing something that often goes unspoken in public health: stigma. Too many people still delay testing, treatment, or care because of fear, misinformation, or isolation. Community health workers play a critical role in breaking that cycle, building trust, connecting people to services, and making care feel accessible rather than intimidating. That kind of work doesn’t always make headlines, but it changes lives every day. We’re grateful to the Gilead Foundation for recognizing the importance of community-based organizations and investing in solutions that happen on the ground, not just in theory. At Poverello, the mission has always been simple: make sure no one faces illness or food insecurity alone. This grant helps us push that mission forward. #PublicHealth #HealthEquity #HIVPrevention #CommunityHealth #BrowardCounty

We are proud to announce that The Poverello Center has received a $400,000 grant from the Gilead Foundation to support our Empowering Communities: CHW-Led HIV Prevention & Health Equity Initiative. This funding enhances our efforts across South Florida to reduce HIV stigma, expand access to prevention, and support individuals living with HIV through community-based care. Our Community Health Workers play a vital role in this initiative by providing testing, prevention education, navigation, mental health screening, food support, and linkage to care. In 2024, we achieved a 94% viral suppression rate among the clients we serve, demonstrating the impact of our community-driven approach. With this grant, we can deepen our work in Broward County while addressing the social determinants that influence testing, adherence, and long-term health outcomes. We express our gratitude to the Gilead Foundation for their support of this initiative. As specified in the grant agreement, this funding is dedicated to the program described and is not contingent upon the purchase, prescription, or recommendation of any products. While HIV stigma and inequities persist, so does community leadership. We are ready to take action.

We’re grateful to share that Poverello was recently featured on WSVN to spotlight the growing need in our community and the services we provide every day. The story helped shine a light on something we see firsthand: more individuals and families are turning to Poverello for food assistance, healthcare support, and essential resources. Local coverage like this matters. It helps us: • Reach people who may not know help is available • Connect with new donors and volunteers • Raise awareness around food insecurity and health access in South Florida We’re thankful to the WSVN team for helping us share our mission and for giving our community a closer look at the impact happening inside our pantry, clinic, and thrift stores. If you’d like to support the work, you can donate, volunteer, or shop at our stores. Every action helps us serve more people. Together, we’re making a difference.

We’re grateful to The Our Fund Foundation for awarding Poverello a $40,000 grant through their new Pillars Fund initiative. The Pillars Fund is designed to lift up organizations with a proven record of impact. This support helps us keep doing what we do best, showing up for our community with compassion, dignity and care. From healthy groceries to holistic health services, every part of our mission is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves access to wellness no matter their circumstances. At Poverello, the mission has always been clear: provide life-saving care and dignity to people living with HIV and other chronic illnesses. What started more than three decades ago as a small effort to help neighbors has grown into a vital center for South Florida. Today, Poverello operates a food pantry that feeds thousands, a pharmacy that ensures access to critical medication, a thrift store that fuels sustainability, and testing and wellness services that save lives every single day. It is more than services. It is community. It is about creating a place where health, hope, and compassion come together. When you shop, donate, or support Poverello, you are not just giving back.
