The Music Industry Podcast with Mark Sutherland
About us
The Money Trench (TMT) is The Music Industry Podcast from Mark Sutherland, exec producer Mike Walsh, Tape Notes and supported by SoundOn and Tixel. Each Monday, Mark dissects the biggest music industry news stories of the week, in the company of one of the industry’s most influential executives. Followed by a deep dive into that exec’s career in music, including their thoughts on where we’re at and where we’re heading. There is also a weekly newsletter – featuring Mark's take on that week’s hottest stories and our latest episode, plus an exclusive heads-up on what’s coming up next. If you’re wondering where the name The Money Trench comes from, it’s a reference to the classic Hunter S Thompson misquote about the music business being “a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs” – before adding: “Of course, there’s also a negative side…” TMT is here to look at all sides of the music business and celebrate the most exciting industry on the planet. Don’t start your music week without it. TMT supports Earth/Percent, the music industry’s climate foundation. Co-founded by Brian Eno, Earth/Percent works with scientists, researchers, and activists, to help the music industry support the most impactful climate organisations around the world. TMT is also supported by Aimless Play and Sennheiser microphones. TMT’s production partner is Tape Notes and the podcast is exec produced by Mike Walsh. TMT music is provided by Tom A Smith. TMT logo design by Junkhead Studio. For media inquiries, please contact Fourth Pillar. Please contact mike@themoneytrench.com for guest suggestions and further info.

This week’s TMT guest has repeatedly rewired the DNA of British pop music on her way to becoming the UK’s hitmaker-in-chief. Kamille is the ultimate multi-hyphenate: artist, songwriter, producer and owner of her own label/publishing company, and – talking ahead of picking up the Inspiration award at this week’s MPG Awards – she has plenty of must-hear views on the realities of modern hitmaking and why the creatives behind the songs need more respect (and money). Plus, some top tales from her time working with Little Mix and on The X Factor with Simon Cowell. Don’t miss it! This week’s TMT guest has gigged all over the world, from the bottom rungs of the grassroots circuit, all the way up to sold-out arenas and the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony. So Frank Turner is very well-placed to comment on all the current music industry issues – and that’s exactly what he does in this episode, with no-holds-barred views on everything from secondary ticketing to streaming remuneration, the pressures of social media and why independent venues must be saved. Plus, there’s his own remarkable journey through the biz, and just how he got that Olympics gig. It’s a must-hear episode for the biz, so check it out… Listen here - https://pods.to/tmt84 #themoneytrench #musicindustry #musicpodcast #musician #frankturner Mark Sutherland Mike Walsh

This week’s TMT guest has seen the music industry from all angles. Jeremy Lascelles started as a manager in the early ‘70s and has also been a tour manager, worked at labels (Virgin Records in its ‘70s/’80s heyday), publishers (Chrysalis Music) and is now co-founder and CEO of his own burgeoning independent company Blue Raincoat Music, which combines management, records and publishing. One of the true legends of the game, Jeremy has some great stories featuring the likes of Lou Reed, Sting and how he made Three Lions happen for The Lightning Seeds. But he also has the searing insight of someone who has been there and done it several times over, but who has always retained his love of music and everything that comes with it. Enjoy! This week’s TMT guest knows her way around a studio like no one else. Award-winning producer/engineer/mixer Catherine Marks has collaborated with some of the alt-rock greats of recent years – including Wolf Alice, St Vincent and Boygenius – and recently worked on the brilliant Help (2) album with the likes of Olivia Rodrigo. We had a fun conversation in Catherine’s West London studio, talking about her trailblazing journey through the biz, why the industry needs to place more value on studios and producers, plus the time an artist kept her awake in the studio for four days straight. This week’s TMT guests are true champions of British music, as well as two of the smartest young managers in the game. Adam Harris and Callum Read are the co-founders of Touchdown MGMT and Happy Artist Records, and helped Scottish heroes The Snuts put rock music back on the UK map long before its current revival. We had a fun chat about what it takes to break an act in the current climate, the key to a strong artist-manager relationship – and why you should be very careful about how you answer the phone when Moby calls… Listen here - https://pods.to/tmt81 #themoneytrench #musicindustry #artistmanagement #recordlabel Mark Sutherland Mike Walsh
