Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia was proud to be part of the Breakthrough Prize Foundation awards this weekend—often called the “Oscars of Science”—with our work featured as examples of the transformative power of gene therapy. From pioneering the first FDA-approved gene therapy for inherited blindness to advancing first-of-its-kind personalized gene editing, CHOP and Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System teams were recognized on a global stage. Drs. Katherine A. High, Jean Bennett, and Albert M. Maguire—whose groundbreaking research restored sight for patients with rare genetic blindness—were awarded the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences. Equally powerful were the voices of patients and families—like Hannah, who shared how gene therapy allowed her to see the world in a whole new way, and KJ, whose story represents the future of personalized medicine through the work of Rebecca Ahrens-Nicklas and Kiran Musunuru. Moments like these are a reminder: behind every breakthrough is a child, a family, and a future changed. Read more and see highlights from the evening: http://ms.spr.ly/6042v8GQI The full award show will premiere on YouTube on Sunday, April 26th at 3PM Eastern / 12PM Pacific.

We are thrilled to congratulate our CHOP and Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System team – Drs. Katherine High, Albert Maguire and Jean Bennett – on receiving the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for their work in developing the first FDA-approved gene therapy for an inherited condition, which dramatically improves sight in people with a form of blindness called Leber Congenital Amaurosis (LCA). Their story is a masterclass in scientific resilience. At a time when gene therapy faced immense skepticism, this team stayed the course. Their breakthrough treatment for LCA did more than restore sight; it provided a regulatory and scientific roadmap for the entire field of genomic medicine.

Drs. David Hill and Lisa Young were recently recognized with the International Klosterfrau Group Award for Research of Airway Diseases in Childhood, a prestigious international honor presented annually at the German Society for Pediatric Pneumology meeting. The award highlights their study showing that certain lipids – fats commonly found in obesity-related foods – can trigger asthma-like inflammation in the lungs. Study findings suggest that existing medications could potentially be repurposed to treat this form of asthma when paired with dietary changes. Read the full study here: https://lnkd.in/e8w8VAfA.

New research published in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine found that a tele‑simulation program for pediatric emergency staff at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana was associated with a large decrease in inpatient hospital deaths among children with suspected sepsis. In many low-resource settings, access to consistent, hands-on emergency training is limited. This culturally adapted, cost-effective program was designed to help frontline clinicians better recognize and treat pediatric sepsis – demonstrating the potential of scalable solutions to improve outcomes globally.
