We recently celebrated a major milestone with the topping out of the new four-story LACCD East Los Angeles College Nursing, Allied Health, and Public Safety Building, designed to support the next generation of healthcare and public safety professionals. Swinerton is providing general contracting services for this state-of-the-art facility, which will serve Nursing, Allied Health, and Public Service/Public Safety programs including EMT, Fire, and Police. The building brings these disciplines together through in-house simulation labs, research spaces, and flexible classrooms that support both focused instruction and interdisciplinary learning. Because hands-on, real-world simulation is central to these programs, the project requires a thoughtful and highly coordinated construction approach. From custom acoustical, audiovisual, and MEP systems to advanced technology, specialized equipment, and oversized control rooms, every element is being carefully integrated to support complex learning environments. Safety is a team effort and relies on the buy-in of every project member. Trevor Burgess, Safety Manager for Swinerton’s Carolinas Division, partners with field teams before projects even break ground through rigorous pre-planning of all site activities, particularly the high-risk processes. This minimizes unforeseen delays and makes sure everyone gets home safe. A one-team mentality extends across the nation, as the Safety Team continuously collaborates and helps each other succeed. Swinerton’s support and people-first approach is what inspires Trevor to come to work every day.

Our role is never to say no — it’s always to find the safest way to say yes. During Safety Week, we’re highlighting Senior Safety Engineer Ki'yera Rhymer, GSP from our Austin Division and her journey into construction safety at Swinerton. For Ki’yera, it’s about being part of a team that truly values the time, research, and effort it takes to keep everyone safe. As she shares, supporting teams in the field and helping ensure work is done safely is not only appreciated — it’s what inspired her to pursue a career in construction safety.
