The robots can see your hands. But only in 2D. Ken Goldberg, one of the world's leading robotics researchers, put it plainly: "We actually have a big repository of videos of people moving things around with their hands... That's a very valuable source, but the problem is these are two-dimensional videos. And it's very hard to infer what's the three dimensional activity that's going on." This is one of the most underappreciated bottlenecks in humanoid robotics today. The industry has vast libraries of human motion data — millions of hours of people grasping, sorting, assembling, and manipulating objects in the real world. It's a legitimate foundation for training. Except for one problem: it's flat. Depth. Occlusion. The precise geometry of a grip. The spatial relationship between a hand, an object, and a surface. None of that survives the journey into a 2D frame. Humanoid robots don't operate in a flat world. They need to understand exactly where things are in three-dimensional space — and they need that understanding in milliseconds, not tenths of a second. That's the gap Summer Robotics is built to close. Low-latency 3D data isn't a nice-to-have for the next generation of humanoid platforms. It's the foundation. Without it, robots are guessing at depth from shadows and parallax. With it, they have the spatial clarity to act with precision, at speed, in unstructured environments. The 2D video archives Goldberg describes aren't wasted — but their full potential can only be unlocked when you can finally see the third dimension they were always missing. The data exists. The robots are ready. The missing piece is 3D.

Announcing: Summer Robotics closes first tranche of Series A funding led by Applied Ventures, LLC This milestone accelerates our mission to bring spatial intelligence to robotics, enabling machines to see, understand, and act in the real world. Applied Ventures, LLC (the venture capital arm of Applied Materials, Inc.) led the round, with participation from Solasta Ventures, NAVER D2SF, and other strategic investors. This funding drives three key initiatives: → Scaling our Kortx machine vision platform for manufacturing, logistics, and humanoid robotics → Expanding commercial partnerships in automotive and beyond → Growing our team to accelerate product development and market adoption We're also thrilled to welcome Rick Van Valkenburg as Chief Commercial Officer. With nearly 30 years in automation and machine vision, Rick's expertise will be instrumental as we scale. Our Kortx platform enables robots to operate in dynamic, unstructured environments under varying lighting conditions, solving challenges that have long held automation back.
