  • National Speech-Language-Hearing Month mini series Part 2!🗣️ Take a look at our chat with Caroline Keighran, M.S., CCC-SLP✨ 🤔 What misconceptions do people have about speech therapy?: Just how much ground we cover! Some people are surprised to hear that we are responsible for many facets of communication, including speech sounds, language, fluency, voice and social skills. It is a lot that we fit under our umbrella. Some people also seem surprised that we can work with the geriatric population or at hospitals. ⏳ How have you noticed the field has changed over the past few years?: In so many ways! I had no idea how fluid some of the views on different abilities and differences as well as treatment approaches would be. -- I feel there used to be so much emphasis on verbal expression, whereas now we look at so many other ways to help, honor and accept the way that they communicate. It feels so much more authentic to me now, whereas in years past, there seemed to be much pressure to expect outcomes that may not have been desired or realistic for a specific student.

  • National Speech-Language-Hearing Month mini series alert!🗣️ We caught up with some members of our Speech team to chat about everything from how the field has changed for them over the years, misconceptions people tend to have about speech language pathology, and some advice and helpful skills needed to thrive! First up is Heather Pederson, M.S., CCC-SLP🙌 ⏳ How have you noticed the field has changed over the past few years?: The most profound shift has been in access to information, training, and clinical opportunities. When I was in graduate school in the mid-1990s, I was typing reports on an electric typewriter and heading to the library to find research. Today, I have virtually unlimited resources at my fingertips. We are more informed, connected, and skilled than ever before, and it’s truly remarkable. What hasn’t changed is just as important: our profession is, and always will be, grounded in human connection. No amount of technology can replace that, and no level of clinical skill is effective without it. It’s our foundation—and ultimately, what makes this work so meaningful. 📚 What skills/tools can help an SLP thrive?: I’ve always believed that thriving in this profession requires more than strong clinical skills—important as those are. It’s about staying curious, flexible, caring, and compassionate. Those qualities have grounded me in lifelong learning, strengthened my ability to collaborate, and kept me focused on the people I serve. Pair that foundation with solid clinical skills, and enjoy the THRIVE.
